Viral bodycam footage shows El Paso motorcycle cop almost hit by speeding car after pulling over another vehicle

The stopped car had just been stopped for going 85 mph in a 60 mph zone

The El Paso Police Department has released some scary officer bodycam video footage of one of their motorcycle cops almost being struck by a speeding car after he had pulled another driver over on the side of the highway.

“This traffic stop started like any other,” writes the department in a description alongside the video.

“While one of our motorcycle officers was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 10 with emergency lights activated, a distracted driver failed to control their speed and narrowly missed striking the officer before crashing into the stopped vehicle. The impact pushed the vehicle approximately 500 feet down the shoulder.”

Following the crash, the officer asks the driver in the blue vehicle that was struck if he’s okay.

Earlier, the officer approaches the same blue car he’s just pulled over and the driver says: “Sorry about that, officer, you came up on me fast.”

The officer says, “Good morning sir! You were doing 85 in a 60, okay? You got your licence with you?”

When the driver hands over his licence, the officer says, ‘Well, here’s your card,” and is about to hand the licence back when the speeding black vehicle hits the stopped blue car with a huge crashing sound, pushing it forward.

Both the officer and the driver of the stopped blue vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This incident is a stark reminder that traffic stops are among the most dangerous parts of an officer’s job,” said the department, which posted bodycam video footage of the incident as a warning to drivers to be aware of their surroundings.

“In a matter of seconds, a routine stop nearly turned tragic.”

The distracted driver in the black car was charged with failure to control speed causing a collision.
