A vehicle crashed into the Rideau River early Friday morning, damaging the traffic lights and snarling traffic at Riverside Drive and Walkley Road.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 5:40 a.m. Friday morning near Mooney’s Bay, according to Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps. Two people were able to swim their way ashore after the crash, he said.

“They were both assessed by paramedics and they were both released at scene,” Deschamps said. There were no serious injuries reported.

The vehicle is expected to be pulled from the river Friday, which may slow traffic in the area, according to an Ottawa Police Service social media post.

Police were on scene directing traffic, while the traffic lights were damaged, and said repairs could take several hours.

“Drivers are asked to use caution, expect delays and follow the direction of officers or traffic control personnel,” police said.
