Toronto cops hunt for murder suspect known only as ‘Jay’ in 2022 killing

Toronto Police are now on the hunt for a murder suspect known only as “Jay.”

Det. Sgt. Sajeev Nair of the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit provided an update on the investigation into the murder of Ding Ping Wang, who was killed on Nov. 12, 2022. 

“If you are watching, we know more about you today than we did two weeks ago,” Nair said Friday morning regarding Jay. “I told you last time that your world was going to get smaller, and today it is going to get even smaller.” 

Officers found Wang in a parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds in the Midland-Passmore Aves. area. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. One suspect was spotted leaving the scene on foot. 

Based on the information released Friday, Nair is convinced someone in the city knows the identity of the suspect.  

“Someone may recognize his appearance, his movements, his associates or the vehicle connected to him,” Nair said. 

Back on July 28, Nair stood before the podium and made a plea to the public for help in solving the case.

“I was here to announce that after nearly four years of investigative work, we had obtained new security footage of the suspect wanted in Mr. Wang’s murder, along with an artist’s rendering with the assistance of an eyewitness that came forward. 

“I also announced that we believed the suspect was left-handed and had a specific gait when walking. That release generated valuable information.” 

On the hunt for Jay

Based on that press conference, additional information was gleaned and shared Friday. 

“I can now announce that we believe the suspect goes by the first name ‘Jay.’ We are asking for the public’s help in identifying Jay and helping us determine his full identity. We are also releasing additional footage that we believe is significant to this investigation.” 

The footage in question is from March of 2023, when an attempted murder took place in the same parking lot as the Wang murder. 

An individual was getting into their white Toyota van when a suspect emerged from a black SUV and shot at him multiple times.

“We believe the male in the video is the same suspect involved in the murder of Wang,” Nair said. “We also believe the suspect had access to a black SUV at the time.” 

Nair was asked for information that proves the March video is linked to Wang’s murder in a Scarborough parking lot. 

“We have some specific information, but I can’t get into the details, but the information we have received as a result of the first media scrum has now propelled us to release this new information,” he said.  

As for the suspect’s location? 

“I believe that Jay is around,” Nair said.
