Top Gun 3 is finally a go at Paramount, as it taps Tom Cruise to lead the sequel to one of the biggest post-COVID sensations, Top Gun: Maverick. The project has been under David Ellison’s radar since Skydance acquired Paramount, and at CinemaCon 2026, the media conglomerate confirmed the threequel with Cruise returning in the shoes of Maverick (via The Guardian).
Although Jerry Bruckheimer is confirmed to produce the movie, beyond his involvement, no other cast members have officially been attached to the project yet. Joseph Kosinski, who has been on an impressive run since the success of Top Gun: Maverick, has yet to sign on to direct the threequel.
This is not to say the original cast and crew will not return. Given how early the project appears to be in development, it is not surprising that the casting process hasn’t commenced yet.
Who Will Join Tom Cruise in Top Gun 3?
While it can’t be said for certain what the casting for this movie holds, there’s a good chance Miles Teller and Glen Powell will reprise their roles as Rooster and Hangman in the upcoming threequel.
Teller previously joked that he would need at least a six-month heads-up call before production commences in order to get in shape, adding (via The Late Night with Stephen Colbert):
I just told Tom, I said, give me enough time, a heads up for me to get in shape. It’s one month per ab. I need six months heads up. That’s the only way I train.
Glen Powell, too, has teased the project in the past, including in a 2024 interview where he quipped (via Variety), “I mean, I have a date.” So expect the mainstays from the sequel to reprise their roles opposite Tom Cruise in this threequel.
What Will Top Gun 3 Be About?
A still from Top Gun: Maverick | Credit: ParamountJoseph Kosinski, who has been a pretty busy individual since Top Gun: Maverick pushed him into the limelight, the director did previously offered some insight into the potential narrative for the threequel. Even though the plot details remain under wraps, last year, Joseph Kosinski revealed that the story will focus on Maverick’s existential crisis.
While the sequel already felt like a passing of the torch moment, the director confirmed Tom Cruise will not be taking a back seat in the upcoming movie, and further described the threequel as “one last ride”. In an interview with GQ, he noted:
I think we’ve found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we’re proposing, but the idea itself of the story we’re telling. We’re thinking much bigger than… It’s a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it’s much bigger than himself. It actually… I’m trying to describe it without giving anything away. [Laughs.] It’s an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small, I think, as a movie, compared to what we’re talking about.
Ehren Kruger, who also penned Kosinski’s F1, is responsible for the Top Gun threequel’s script, and even though there’s a chance things could have changed since Kosinski’s interview, with Cruise on board, there’s a pretty good reason to be optimistic.
