SUMMARY

  • Ergo Proxy was released in 2006 and enjoys a dedicated fan base to this day.
  • The writer of the series, Dai Sato, shared the vision behind the show that is reminiscent of one Marvel show.
  • Ergo Proxy has its flaws, but the writer shared that there was so much more that they wanted to convey.

Ergo Proxy anime could easily be considered underrated, as a result of the disparity between its quality and its popularity. Some aspects of the show are the peak of the cyberpunk experience. However, the pacing of the show affects its appeal, making it unfit for everyone. Despite this, the anime enjoys a dedicated fanbase that appreciates everything it offers.
Beyond the spectacular visuals, Ergo Proxy can get dark and heavy. The makers had a specific vision in mind that explains the darker elements of the show. During an interview, Dai Sato shared that it was a Marvel show that reminded him the goal behind the anime. Here’s the complete story of how this connection between Marvel and Ergo Proxy came to be.

Dai Sato is a renowned figure in the anime-manga industry. He has worked as the screenwriter on several notable projects, including Cowboy Bebop, Wolf’s Rain, Samurai Champloo, Eureka Seven, and Ergo Proxy. During an interview with Anime News Network, Dai Sato was asked about his experience as the series composer of Ergo Proxy

He shared that there was a certain nuance to the project. Shuko Murase, the director of the series, asked Sato if he wanted to work together in the next project, which ended up being Ergo Proxy. Their initial vision was much broader and darker, something akin to a darker version of American Superheroes.

Just as a comparison, right now you can see shows like Daredevil and Iron Fist on Netflix. I look at things like that now and think “You know what? This is the kind of feel that we wanted to go for.”

It’s interesting to hear that Marvel’s Daredevil was what the creators of Ergo Proxy were aiming for. While the show wasn’t out, yet when the annime released, its darker themes and intricacies were what Sato was probably referring to. There are some commonalities between the two shows. Daredevil is extremely dark, both visually and story wise . Beyond the violence and gore, there are darker scenes where the characters are put under grave circumstances.

For instance, Fisk has some of the most disturbing scenes and so does Julie. And even that is just the tip of the iceberg. Fans consider Daredevil to be one of the best Marvel shows of all time, and it’s remarkable Rotten Tomatoes rating is a sound proof of that. Most fans are looking forward to the upcoming sequel to the series, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, which is scheduled for 2025. As for Ergo Proxy, the picture painted by Dai Sato shows that there was more to it than what came to be.

Ergo Proxy was Much More than What Came to Be

Opposed to the popular opinion that Ergo Proxy has dreadful pacing, Sato believed that it was too fast-paced when he began working on it. Without going into much detail, he shared that there were many ideas that didn’t make it to the final product. If they were going for a darker feel resembling that of Daredevil, it seems like Ergo Proxy could have been much more than what came to be.

That instantly makes one think of more episodes. However, the episode count wasn’t the main issue, but the execution of the series. The world building and the set-up were top-notch but the execution of the storyline was inconsistent throughout the show. This problem led to many fans dropping the show midway. There’s no way of knowing what could’ve been of the show, but what we got, even with its flaws, is easily a must-have experience for sci-fi lovers.

Ergo Proxy is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
