What’s happening with Canada Post and door-to-door mail delivery?

On Thursday, Canada Post identified a second round of communities that are marked for conversion from door-to-door mail delivery to community mailboxes in 2027. Those 37 communities are in B.C., Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta, totalling about 485,000 addresses.

Earlier this year, Canada Post had already identified 136,000 addresses in 13 communities that were slated for community mailboxes toward the end of this year or early next year.

Across the country, about three-quarters of Canadian addresses already use community mailboxes or centralized mailboxes, such as those in apartment lobbies.

The conversion to centralized, secure community mailboxes comes as part of the mail service’s attempts to balance its financial situation following years of steady decline, including a record loss last year and a another significant loss in the first quarter of 2026.

“Community mailbox conversions are a key element of Canada Post’s plan to transform the postal service to meet the evolving needs of Canadians without becoming a recurring burden on taxpayers,” read a news release announcing the latest group of communities.

How bad is Canada Post’s financial situation?

In the first quarter of 2026, Canada Post recorded a $205 million before-tax loss due to declining revenues across all business segments. That figure overshadows the $41 million loss recorded in the same quarter the previous year.

Revenue also fell by $181 million, or 14 per cent, in the first quarter of 2026, compared with the same period last year.
