The space was scheduled to close on Friday, June 12 because it was reaching the end of its lease, according to Nicole Allen, spokesperson for Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC).

The location is one of several satellite workplaces across the country opened under the government’s multi-year “GCcoworking” pilot project offering flexible workspaces for public servants from more than 50 government organizations.

After the closure of the site in Gatineau, 12 other locations across the country will remain, including five in the National Capital Region.

As a whole, the initiative was set to expire at the end of March, but PSPC extended the pilot until this fall.

“No decisions have been made regarding operations beyond the extension period,” Allen told the Ottawa Citizen in March. “PSPC continues to keep users and our client organizations informed as more information becomes available.”

During the extension, the following sites in Ottawa-Gatineau will continue to operate as normal:

The government opened most of the locations in the National Capital Region in 2019 to help accommodate the hybrid work model it was adopting at the time.

The closure comes as federal departments prepare to welcome public servants back in-office four days per week as of July 6, though several large organizations are staggering their return-to-office due to a lack of space.

CBC previously reported PSPC was considering several options to help accommodate the latest return-to-office directive, including “reallocating” co-working locations to help departments that were short on space.
