The Social Reckoning dropped a new trailer featuring a cast that differs from that of The Social Network. In fact, the new film is being promoted as a companion piece rather than a sequel, and the only major element it shares with the earlier film is writer Aaron Sorkin, who has now stepped into the director’s role. Notably, we do not get Jesse Eisenberg’s quirky yet sharp portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg. Instead, Jeremy Strong replaces Eisenberg, portraying a more corporate version of the Meta boss.

The new movie might have you wondering why Eisenberg stepped away from the role. The actor explained last year that his reason for not returning had nothing to do with Sorkin’s project itself. He simply felt that he had grown out of the role. Eisenberg explained during an appearance on TODAY:
Listen, for reasons that have nothing to do with how amazing that movie will be, really, truthfully. But when you play a character, you feel, at some point, that you feel, maybe, you’ve grown into something else.
He further added that the new movie is “a really wonderful movie.” He shared, “I’m friends with Aaron Sorkin, who wrote and is directing this movie, and all of the reasons that I am not in it are completely unrelated to how brilliant it will be.”
For some fans, Eisenberg’s exit from the role does not feel like a major loss, especially since Strong is replacing him. He rose to prominence with his breakthrough role as Kendall Roy in HBO’s Succession, for which he won a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in The Apprentice.
Jeremy Strong on Replacing Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg
Last year, Jeremy Strong opened up about replacing Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning. When he appeared at the Academy Museum Gala in October 2025, he was asked whether he had talked to Eisenberg about taking over the role. Strong shared with THR, “No, I think that has nothing to do with what I’m going to do.”
About the script of the movie, Strong shared, “It’s one of the great scripts I’ve ever read. It speaks to our time, it touches the third rail of everything happening in our world.” He further shared about his character, “It’s a great character — fascinating, complex — and I’m approaching it with great care and empathy and objectivity.”
Strong is collaborating with Aaron Sorkin for the third time, after previously working with the filmmaker on The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Molly’s Game. We got the first glimpse into Strong’s performance when the trailer of the movie was released on Wednesday. He sported a different hairstyle (a Caesar cut) from his previous appearances for the Zuckerberg role.
Jeremy Strong Is Incredible In the New Trailer of The Social Reckoning
Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning | Credits: Sony Pictures ReleasingJeremy Strong appeared in the new trailer of The Social Reckoning, alongside Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Bill Burr. In the movie based on real-life events, young Facebook engineer Frances Haugen, played by Madison, goes to Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by White, to bring attention to Facebook’s hidden dark secrets.
Together, the duo takes on the powerful Meta boss, played by Strong. This portrayal from Strong is in stark contrast to Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal. He nails Zuckerberg’s voice and certain mannerisms. He declares in the trailer, “I’m a free-speech absolutist.” He further says in the trailer, “I’m not the one who’s lying, and I’m not stopping them from seeing someone who is.”
The film is going to be as intense as the first movie, 16 years ago. With Sorkin writing, the dialogues are expected to be sharp and fiery. The movie also features Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Gbenga Akinnagbe.
