Across the Spider-Verse was able to take a concept that was being milked by every franchise possible and turn it into something fans cannot get enough of, despite the idea being wholly saturated.

Along with the setting, the story introduces audiences to a cast of lovely and interesting characters who take on the iconic Spider-Man character. This was partly because the film chose to represent some Spider-People with their unique art style.

Spider-Punk is one of those characters that the creators of the film really went all in with. Apart from being a fan-favorite character instantly, Hobie Brown had a lot of work put into his style and aesthetic, something that took the better part of three years to make.

However, the character’s design was completely accurate with the concept of Spider-Punk, which did benefit from the unique style that Spider-Verse brought to the table.

Hobie Brown’s animation is just as anti-establishment as his character

Getting his powers from a spider that was irradiated through chemical waste, and fighting the establishment alongside heroes like Captain Anarchy, Spider-Punk is a unique character with a backstory that could sell tickets on its own. While the wider cast of Marvel heroes is absent in Sony’s Spider-Verse films, the filmmakers more than made up for the character by giving him a unique feature that wasn’t even a part of Miles Morales’ animation.

The Spider-Verse films in general have a lot of fun with the rules of animation. Peter Parker had his evasive maneuvers animated at 24 frames per second, while Miles dealt with the same at 12 frames, which indicated that the younger Spider-Man was less confident and inexperienced.

Something similar was done with Hobie, where the character itself was animated on several different framerates, depending on his character design. This was corroborated by the directors of the film, who wanted Hobie’s style of animation to depict his ideas too. Speaking with Discussing Films, they said:

We looked at all the Marvel comics and found that in Spider-Punk with his punk rock nature and rejection of norms, authority, and traditional ideas. So we thought, “Let’s let his animation style represent that too, and let’s try all these crazy experiments.” It was cool because that’s kind of how punk rock zines and punk rock posters are, they’re like experimental art projects.

While this process took quite some time, it can be assumed that every minute of it was worth it, given the amount of praise that is being poured on the character. Not just from a technical standpoint, but Daniel Kaluuya‘s performance has also resonated with a lot of audiences that are happy to see positive Black British representation on screen.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is also expected to feature the character

As newer and older allies of Miles Morales assemble to rescue him from his other self, along with defending him from the Spider Society, Hobie Brown is seen joining their ranks after quitting the Spider Society earlier in the film.

While Across the Spider-Verse saw the narrative focus on a largely new cast of Spider-People, the ending of the film saw Gwen assemble Hobie, Pavitr, Noir, Spider-Ham, Penny Parker, Peter B. Parker, and even Margo Kess assemble to head into Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

While this cast of characters could be the one audiences follow in the next Spider-Verse film, the film could also feature some other versions of Spider-Man yet to be seen on screen. Fans are excited to see Hobie Brown return to the big screen, as the small presence that he did have in Across the Spider-Verse left such a huge impact on audiences.
