The lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth is expanding once again. Set between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum explores the untold chapter of Gandalf and Aragorn’s desperate search for the creature who holds the secret of the One Ring.
What makes the upcoming film especially fascinating is how it blends returning icons with bold new additions. Creating a bridge between nostalgia and a fresh direction, the announcement was made during Warner Bros. CinemaCon presentation held on Tuesday.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the confirmed cast and who they play in the film (via IMDb):
1. Andy Serkis as Gollum
Andy Serkis is returning with a double duty: as the director and as the star. After decades of playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings films, it wouldn’t be a Hunt for Gollum without the man who defined the role.
Since this film takes place while Gollum is being hunted by both the heroes and the forces of Sauron, we can expect a more feral, desperate version of the character that we have seen before. It might also be a long-overdue character study of Middle-earth’s most tragic figure.
2. Ian McKellen as Gandalf
Gandalf in The Hobbit films | Credits: Warner Bros. PicturesSir Ian McKellen will also reprise his legendary role as Gandalf, instantly grounding the film in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original world. Chronologically, Gandalf plays a crucial role during this period, as he is the one actively searching for information about the One Ring and sends Strider to look for Gollum before Sauron can find him.
The primary driver of the plot, he senses the growing shadow in Mordor and realizes that Gollum’s knowledge could lead the Dark Lord straight to the Shire. In this sense, his presence in the story is not only essential but vital in the 17-year-old’s search.
3. Kate Winslet as Marigol
Kate Winslet | Credits: Mare of Easttown / HBOOne of the most intriguing additions to the cast is Kate Winslet, who will play Marigol, a new character created specifically for this film. Details about her character remain under wraps, but speculation suggests that she might be from Middle-earth’s lesser-explored regions.
Winslet’s presence signals that Marigol would not just be a side character. Although we will have to wait to know more about who Marigol is, she will likely carry emotional weight in the story.
4. Jamie Dornan as Strider / Aragorn
Jamie Dornan | Credits: Fifty Shades of Grey films | Universal PicturesOne of the most striking additions to the cast is Jamie Dornan as Strider. Taking over the iconic mantle from Viggo Mortensen, he will play the younger, grittier, and wandering version of the Dúnedain Ranger as he is sent across Middle-earth by Gandalf to look for Gollum.
The film will explore his mission to track Gollum down, as he operates in the shadows to fulfill the task. Not only does he have huge shoes to fill, but he will also need to portray a slightly different version— less regal, more rugged— of Aragorn that fans have not seen before.
5. Leo Woodall as Halvard
Leo Woodall | Credits: Vladimir / NetflixWhile initially Leo Woodall was rumored to be playing Aragorn, it has been revealed that he has been cast as Halvard. He is another original character whose role is being kept secret.
But given the name, he is likely a fellow Ranger of the North and a companion to Aragorn. It is rumored that Halvard, the Dúnedain Ranger, accompanies Strider in protecting the lands of what became the Lost Realm of Arnor.
6. Lee Pace as Thranduil
Lee Pace in The Hobbit films | Credits: Warner Bros. PicturesLee Pace returns as Thranduil, bringing back the Elven king’s cold elegance and calculated presence. While Thranduil’s involvement in the hunt for Gollum is not heavily documented in Tolkien’s main texts, his kingdom, Mirkwood, plays a significant role in Gollum’s journey.
Gollum is also held captive in Mirkwood before he makes his daring escape, which makes Pace’s Thranduil a key player. Following the actor’s ethereal performance in The Hobbit trilogy, this film could further explore his political and strategic importance.
7. Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins
Elijah Wood as Frodo | Credits: Warner Bros. PicturesLast but certainly not least, Elijah Wood will return in his fan-favorite role of Frodo Baggins. While Frodo is not part of the hunt physically, his inclusion is symbolically important. Potentially, more of a getting the band together cameo, we might see him as a younger Hobbit in the Shire.
At this point in the timeline, Frodo has already inherited the Ring but has not yet begun his journey to Mordor. Even though his role may be small, a cameo, his inclusion adds emotional continuity, connecting The Hunt for Gollum directly to the original trilogy.
| Andy Serkis | Gollum | Director/star; feral, desperate version hunted by heroes/Sauron. |
| Ian McKellen | Gandalf | Plot driver; tasks Aragorn with the Gollum hunt to block Sauron from the Ring secrets. |
| Kate Winslet | Marigol | New character, possibly from an uncharted Middle-earth region. |
| Jamie Dornan | Strider/Aragorn | Young, rugged Dúnedain Ranger tracking Gollum on Gandalf’s orders. |
| Leo Woodall | Halvard | Possibly a Dúnedain Ranger; likely Aragorn’s companion. |
| Lee Pace | Thranduil | Mirkwood Elvenking, who will likely play an important role. |
| Elijah Wood | Frodo Baggins | Young Hobbit post-Ring inheritance. |
Well, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is not just another return to Middle-earth, but is a carefully positioned story that fills in the narrative gaps. What do you think about the upcoming film and its cast?
