The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4, Episode 6 Ending Explained: Will Vox Machina Finally Seek Out Scanlan?

Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains spoilers for The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 kicked into high gear with its later batch of episodes. Pulling out all the stops when it comes to drama, emotion, and even character deaths, the show has clearly started moving at a brisk pace. With a brief tease involving Scanlan Shorthalt, it seems the character might finally appear in the coming batch of episodes. This is largely due to the developments that took place in Episodes 4, 5, and 6.

When we last saw the team, Keyleth’s coronation had been attacked by the Necro Ninja and cultists, and Percy was trying to figure out how to shut off the orb beneath Castle Whitestone. Additionally, the group had decided to venture to Taryon Darrington’s city, given that the stones used in the attack seemingly came from the region where the Darringtons held power.

Episode 4: Taryon, My Wayward Son — Darrington Earns His Spot On Vox Machina

Episode 4 functions as a Vox Machina campaign in microcosm: family drama, monstrous relics, and plenty of comedy that only this group of writers and voice actors could deliver. All the hallmarks of a great Vox Machina story are front and center here. We meet Howaardt Darrington, the sniveling businessman who is Taryon’s father. Grossly disrespectful to the histories and cultures that shape the various members of Vox Machina, Howaardt gets his just deserts at the hands of the son he ignores after Vox Machina discovers that he has been supplying the cult that attacked the group.

In the original playthrough, Taryon Darrington was a new character Sam Riegel played after Scanlan’s departure from the team. The show, however, has cast comedy legend Wayne Brady in the role. The character has already received enough acclaim that there are talks of a Taryon Darrington spinoff (via Popverse). Perhaps, as The Mighty Nein continues for multiple seasons, The Darrington Brigade will get its own show as well?

Episode 5: De Rolo’s Eleven — Where Are Pike and Grog Off To?

This is a heist film through and through. “De Rolo’s Eleven,” a play on the hit film franchise Ocean’s Eleven, revolves around infiltrating the stronghold of the Cobalt Soul so Vox Machina can learn more about the Whispered One. Pike has a vision of a gnome who looks like her fighting the Whispered One, leading her to believe it might be someone in her family tree. After the heist goes horribly wrong, with Darrington ratting out Vox Machina at the first sign of torture, Pike realizes she needs to go home and ask her grandfather about this possible relative.

While the previous episode might have been a story that could stand by itself, De Rolo’s Eleven embraces the heist trope in the most fantastical way possible or perhaps it plays like a fantasy story told in the style of a heist film, whichever you prefer. This is clearly the standout of the three episodes, offering much-needed moments of excitement before the sorrow and misery that the following episode brings. Grog becomes super-intelligent thanks to a potion, Pike gets to use the Titanstone Knuckles, and we learn that Scanlan has been performing shows all over the continent, regaling audiences with tales of Vox Machina, complete with caricature puppets.

Episode 6: We Are His Blood — Necro-Ninja’s Identity, Revealed

Percy’s scientific acumen and Taryon’s magical aptitude allow them to close the void the Briarwoods opened beneath the castle. However, the effort comes at a cost: the show’s first major death, Doty, Taryon’s robotic assistant. This loss prompts an emotionally charged exchange between Percy and Vax for several reasons. Vax gave up part of his future to save Percy. He is angry that he missed his sister’s wedding and that he will likely miss every important moment still to come in her life.

This leads to a tender moment between the two, as Vax and Percy embrace with Vax’s death looming over them. However, Pike and Grog face a much more immediate confrontation with death, as the cult that invaded Keyleth’s coronation has seemingly taken over their home and, as a result, causes the death of Wilhand Trickfoot. It is also revealed that the Necro Ninja is none other than Delilah Briarwood, the wife of Sylas Briarwood, whom the party slew in Season 1.

The vision that Pike saw shows her ancestor (as revealed by Wilhand before his death), holding Mythcarver, the vestige currently in the hands of Scanlan. Given that Scanlan and his daughter are currently performing retellings of Vox Machina’s adventures across the continent, it may finally be time for Percy to scry on their location. With two deaths weighing heavily on them and another drawing ever closer, Vox Machina is more desperate than ever to confront the cult at hand — which, interestingly, is trying to rid the world of death in its own twisted way.

The Legend of Vox Machina delivers these gut punches in a way that even fans of the original live show may not have expected. The poetry in the narrative, giving a sword the name Mythcarver and then placing it in the hands of a bard, or having Wilhand declare that Grog was like a son to him, shows the kind of mature storytelling the show’s writers are capable of.
