President Donald Trump made a last-minute appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died unexpectedly. During his appearance, Trump, 80, said he spoke with Graham just before he passed away, adding that the South Carolina politician didn’t hint at feeling unwell. Trump and Graham’s relationship had been well documented over the last decade, with Graham previously being a vocal critic of Trump before the New York native won the 2016 General Election.

Senator Graham was actually scheduled to appear on “Meet the Press” today, according to a previous report from The Blast. Trump filled in for him on short notice and spoke about his passing.

According to Trump, Graham didn’t tell him that he felt unwell; he did, however, say that he “was feeling a little tired.”

Before his death, Graham traveled to Ukraine to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump said Graham’s trek was “long” and he had just arrived back in the States before his death.

Trump said that, from what he knows, Graham died shortly after their phone call.

A spokesperson from Senator Graham’s team said the politician died from a “brief and sudden illness” the night of July 11.

Trump told the media that Graham’s passing must’ve occurred between 7 and 8 PM because that’s when police arrived on the scene.

“But no, he felt okay,” Trump said. “I mean, actually, on the call, he told, ‘You know, I feel good. But I’m tired.’ He was fine. I had known him well — he would let you know if he wasn’t feeling well. He had days when he didn’t feel so well, and he’d let you know about it.”

Trump, who developed a close relationship with Graham over the years, called the South Carolina senator a “fantastic” person and said that his legacy would leave a mark on the people of the United States.

“… you’re gonna watch: it’s gonna be a very big thing with him. He’s gonna be appreciated more now than he was when he was living, I think,” he said.

After learning of his death, Trump shared a post to his Truth Social account at 3:45 AM, calling Graham “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.”

Trump said that Graham, known for his hawkish foreign policies, was “always working” and would be “greatly missed.”

Graham’s South Carolina counterpart, Tim Scott, also wrote about his death online, calling him a dear “friend” before praising him for his commitment to their state.

“Lindsey remained committed to public service and doing what he loved. He always introduced levity and brought wit to the most challenging moments. Lindsey will be missed,” Scott continued.

Trump wasn’t the only politician to speak about Graham’s passing on “Meet the Press.” According to The Hill, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also discussed the late senator from South Carolina and said the news left him in “a state of shock.”

Like Trump, Netanyahu praised Graham, describing him as “one of the great champions of the American-Israeli alliance.” Netanyahu also said he was a fan of Graham’s because he was “very honest about his views.”

“And the amazing thing about Lindsey Graham is he put it directly. … Sometimes he’d incorporate some words that I won’t repeat now. But he was just so clear, so courageous, both for his own personal safety, but also for what he believed was absolutely necessary for America,” the Prime Minister added.

Graham died at age 71. He first served in Congress as a member of the House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. He ran for Senate in 2002 and succeeded Strom Thurmond.
