Former Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris was recently spotted courtside at a WNBA game and spoke about what she admires most about the league’s players. In another post, the author of “107 Days” was seen giving an inspiring speech to the Los Angeles Sparks roster, reminding them that their work on the hardwood is making a difference. Harris’ appearance comes after members of Congress wrote a letter to the league, advocating for better treatment of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

Harris, the 49th VP of the United States, showed up to support the Los Angeles Sparks as they played the Chicago Sky on Friday, July 10.

During her appearance, she spoke with an ION reporter about her love for the WNBA and shared what she admires most about its players.

“I love the W,” she said. “Incredible excellence in terms of athletic ability, in terms of ambition, in terms of discipline, and what they’re doing to model the height of athleticism.”

Harris also snuck into the LA Sparks locker room after the game to give the roster, which includes Nneka Ogwumike, Kelsey Plum, Cameron Brink, and Dearica Hamby, a special speech.

“You are having an incredible impact,” she said. “I travel our country. Young girls, boys, people of every gender, background, race, watch the W and understand how inspiring it is.”

“Keep doing what you’re doing,” she added. “You guys are impacting people who you may never meet, people who may never know your names or mine. But they are aware of what you’re doing, and it is giving them a sense of their value and their dignity and what they have a right to expect from this world.”

Members Of Congress Sent A Letter To The WNBA About What They Believe Are ‘Racially Motivated’ Attacks Against Caitlin Clark

Harris isn’t the only politician getting involved in the WNBA. According to ESPN, a dozen lawmakers recently wrote a letter to league Commissioner Cathy Engelbert about what they believe are “racially motivated” attacks against Fever standout Clark.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Clark made headlines a week ago after Phoenix Mercury player Alyssa Thomas received a Flagrant 2 foul and was suspended for a game after footage showed her putting her fist in the 24-year-old’s neck.

“As Commissioner, you have an obligation to ensure that every player competes in a safe and professional environment, both on and off the court, free from violence, discrimination, or retaliation,” the letter read. “If discrimination or retaliation is occurring and creating a hostile work environment, we support any appropriate investigation by the Department of Justice, the Department of Labor, or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If true, such conduct could constitute violations of federal civil rights laws.”

The group of Republican lawmakers requested that Engelbert reply to their letter no later than July 24 with answers to their questions about the league’s review process for “physical hostility and violence on the court,” how the WNBA holds players accountable for “overly aggressive acts on the court,” and what the league is doing to combat and protect players from online harassment.

The WNBA Is Partnering With The Obama Presidential Center

In other WNBA news, a new report from The Blast states that the league will become the first in professional sports history to partner with the Obama Presidential Center.

The league is teaming up with the center, which just opened in Chicago’s historic Jackson Park neighborhood, for WNBA All-Star weekend in just a few weeks.

The WNBA will host its AT&T Media Day and Practice at the center’s sprawling athletic facility, which includes a full-size NBA court, as well as the WNBA Changemaker Day and Jr. WNBA Day.
