SUMMARY

  • Mark Cuban's father once advised him to create his own path after taking a young Cuban to his workplace.
  • The advice stuck with Cuban, who decided to never work on anybody else's time again at 29.
  • As a result, he opted to take off his watch and vowed to never splurge on them again.

Several Shark Tank judges have confessed to being frugal with their spending, especially Kevin O’Leary, who dishes out financial advice through his socials on a regular. His peer Mark Cuban, who has been linked with the reality show since 2011 and was also the first billionaire investor in it, the businessman once vowed to not spend a single dime on watches.

Cuban’s decision to not splurge his finances on watches links back to his time with his father, who pushed the former to create his own future and not follow in the latter’s footsteps.

Mark Cuban Took His Father’s Advice to Heart

Mark Cuban‘s stance against watches is more of a symbolic gesture. Considering his father worked 60 hours a week for a company that upholstered cars, Cuban recalled his dad “wanted me to create my own path”. After visiting his father’s workplace, which offered him a glimpse of what it’s like to work for others, the Shark Tank judge took his dad’s advice to heart.

As a result, after selling his first start-up for $6M at 29, which finally provided him financial independence, Cuban, who used to wear his father’s watch at the time, took it off, as he never had to work on anybody else’s time again.

When I sold my first company when I was 29, the only watch I ever owned was one my dad gave to me, I took it off and I put it aside and I said, ‘Now that I’ve sold my company, I never have to work on anybody’s else’s time, so I’m never going to wear a watch again.’

Although the investor never splurged his money on Rolex and other luxurious watches, he does wear the Apple watch to track his health metrics.

With season 16 of Shark Tank set to premiere soon, this will be the last time Mark Cuban will be the judge on the reality TV show. Elaborating on his decision to part ways with the show and reality TV, the businessman added that he’s tired of not being able to spend time with his family.

Considering his kids are getting out of school soon, Cuban expressed that he wants to “spend time directly with them”, stressing that’s important.

I’m leaving just to spend more time with my kids — they’re teenagers now. When they were younger, my wife and I got to tell them where to be and when; now they ain’t listening to us. We shoot in June and September, and just getting the opportunity now when they’re getting out of school to be able to spend time directly with them, that’s important. I’m tired of missing that.

Given how crucial his father’s advice has been for Cuban, with highly experienced and successful himself, it’s safe to say he will go on to share this wisdom with his kids.
