The 10 Strongest ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Characters, Ranked Before You Watch Season 4

Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains spoilers for The Legend of Vox Machina

The universe that Critical Role has managed to stitch together across The Legend of Vox Machina, Mighty Nein, and Bell’s Hells campaigns is a vast, sprawling continuity that would put most other fantasy IPs to shame with the sheer size of its cast alone. Further, it also has some of the strongest characters to come out of fantasy fiction, which seemed inevitable given the power system the story operates in.

Within the confines of the story that had been explored during Campaign 1, and what the animated show has adapted, there are some characters that number among some of the heaviest hitters in the universe. These include some of the most iconic characters from Campaign One, specifically from Season 1 of the show. Here are the ten strongest characters in the show so far, ranked.

10 General Krieg Almost Achieves A Total-Party Knockout

With history having been updated in the show to be closer to the beginning of the Briarwood saga, General Krieg was one of the most interesting villains that Vox Machina faced off against. A part of the Chroma Conclave (who would wreak havoc across Tal’Dorei throughout seasons two and three of the show). Kreig was a lower-tier dragon in the collection of world-enders. Nonetheless, he did give Vox Machina a run for its money and was only defeated thanks to a single weak spot that Vax was able to exploit. One of the strongest entities that the party had come up against, being slightly older and more experienced, could have put the dragon in a higher slot on the list, especially when compared to other villains that the party has faced.

9 Vex Shines With Intellect Instead of Raw Power

Perhaps the most arcanely and physically weak of the group, Vex is not a character that is out of the running when it comes to combat. Her versatile trinkets, along with her pet bear Trinket, manage to put her in the top ten strongest characters in the story so far, despite being far eclipsed by her teammates. A strategist in her own right, Vex has often managed to pull the team out of some dire straits and has been instrumental in executing plans, both arcane and tactical. She earns her place on the list thanks to her versatility and presence of mind in the face of danger, no matter how big.

8 Sylas Briarwood Could Have Tanked Vox Machina Without Keyleth

Sylas Briarwood would have been a tough cookie for Vox Machina to handle had it not been for Keyleth, who we are going to see higher up on the list. What remains an indisputable fact, however, is the amount of trouble that the character creates for the entire party, and even takes Grog head-on in a fight. While Grog does manage to deal a significant amount of damage to the character, his vampire heritage might have managed to give him the edge regardless. Especially with his sword, which drinks blood and strengthens him, the only reason he ranks so low on the list is because of an obvious weakness that he possesses, which makes him practically useless when the sun is out (or summoned).

7 Thordak Deserved The Dread He Radiated

Thordak the Cinder King is one of the most terrifying villains that Matt Mercer created for the campaign, and that is well translated to the animated series. While other dragons in the Chroma Conclave would also deserve to be on the list, it is undeniable that Thordak was one of the more major threats that Vox Machina faced. While the Conclave remains a threat well into Season 3, Thordak is the character that Vox Machina has to significantly push and enlist outside help during the fight to take down.

6 Scanlan is Yet To Come Into His Best Moments of Awesome

Despite being a goofy bard, fans of the actual play livestreams know that there is more to Scanalan Shorthalt than what meets the eye. The best moment that the character has is yet to be adapted in the animated series, but thanks to Sam Riegel’s brilliant portrayal of the character, even in the animated series, Scanlan remains one of the most resourceful characters that the team has on hand, even using Counterspell on Vecna, which was largely considered one of the most important moves in the story of Vox Machina.

5 Percival de Rolo Cracks The Top 5 Despite Being Nerfed By The Show

In the actual play streams, Percival became a beast after he dealt 172 points of damage in a single turn against Umbrasyl. Despite there being significant changes to the character in the show, which have weakened him severely, the character still manages to drop some of the most brutal hits in the story. Thanks to the pepperbox and the various contraptions that he is able to make, Percy’s fusion of technology and magic makes him one of the toughest opponents anyone can expect to meet on the battlefield, especially when facing Vox Machina.

4 Vax Is A Rogue With Divine Inspiration

Vax’s ascension to being a rogue/paladin/ranger, one who is the Champion of the Raven Queen, makes Vax one of the strongest members of the team. Versatile like his twin sister, but armed with powerful magic from three different classes, Vax remains one of the most resourceful characters on the team, having the magic to pull off some of the strongest hits that the team has ever seen. One of the most important characters in the first campaign, Vax, is also at the core of the latter half of the story. Becoming the Champion of the Raven Queen buffs him up significantly, but leaves him out of play for most of the story that follows, especially when he ascends.

3 Grog Strongjaw is The Most Intimidating Member of Vox Machina

Physically, the strongest of the bunch from the get-go, Grog Strongjaw, only gets stronger as the story of Vox Machina progresses. One of the most intimidating fighters of the group, Grog can easily take most opponents in a fight, especially after he acquires the Titanstone Knuckles. Also instrumental in bringing down the likes of Sylas Briarwood and Umbrasyl, Grog remains one of the few characters from the story who can tank a lot of damage and dish out so much more when aimed right. Significantly less versatile than his friends, Grog’s specialty as a fighter and berserker makes him a terrifying threat nonetheless.

2 Pike Trickfoot’s Connection To The Everlight Makes Her A Beast

Being able to resurrect a lot of characters during her tenure with Vox Machina, while also being a fighter that is strong enough to put Grog on the back foot, Pike is a warrior that many misjudge because of her size. Despite her gnomish heritage, Pike consistently remains one of the heaviest hitters that the adventuring party has to offer. Combine that with her devotion to the Everlight and the buffs that she receives therein, and Pike is one of the strongest characters to come out of the first campaign, only to be eclipsed by one character.

1 Keyleth Outclasses Most Enemies- And Her Party

After having decked up significantly over the course of Campaign One, there is little that exists in the world created by Matt Mercer that can actually stand up to Keyleth. With her wild shape abilities and ninth-level spellcasting, it is virtually impossible to go up against the character and come out without being dealt a significant amount of damage. Along with her major buffs, she continues to be one of the strongest characters that Vox Machina has churned out, well into Campaign 1.
