Taylor Sheridan Announces 2 New Movies After Yellowstone Exit

Taylor Sheridan is returning to feature films with Visalia and Capture the Flag, two original projects that carry him well beyond the ranches, oil fields, and crime-ridden towns associated with his television empire. Sheridan wrote both screenplays, while his Bosque Ranch Productions and longtime partner 101 Studios have acquired the rights alongside producer Andrew Lauren.

The timing has invited plenty of ‘post-Yellowstone’ chatter, although his departure from Paramount is gradual rather than immediate. Sheridan’s film agreement with the studio ended in March 2026, while his television deal continues through 2028 before his larger move to NBCUniversal. That distinction is significant because he still has a crowded Paramount slate, including Landman, Lioness, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, The Madison, and Frisco King. His next chapter has started, but he has not packed every saddlebag yet.

Visalia follows a young Cuban woman who escapes the life she has always known and risks a dangerous journey toward freedom in the United States. Her circumstances change when a historic political development draws her back to Cuba, forcing her to confront the country she left and the personal cost of surviving her departure.

The premise gives Sheridan material that differs sharply from Yellowstone, even if it retains his interest in people cornered by land, politics, loyalty, and institutional authority. The protagonist’s return to Cuba could prevent the film from becoming a straightforward escape narrative. She will have to reckon with whether a transformed homeland can deliver the freedom it promises, and whether returning is an act of hope or another perilous gamble.

Capture the Flag moves Sheridan into the space race. The film centres on a NASA engineer attempting to create the first reusable spacecraft capable of travelling to the Moon and returning safely. A wealthy technology magnate offers him the opportunity to make history, although accepting that support could require compromises involving his values, loyalties, and professional independence.

That premise sounds especially timely as private companies have become central participants in modern space travel. Both concepts originated with Lauren, who has been developing them with Sheridan since before the writer became one of television’s most prolific creators. In the announcement, Lauren said (via ScreenRant):

Lauren produced the Academy Award-nominated drama The Brutalist and founded Andrew Lauren Productions, whose credits include Vox Lux, The Spectacular Now, and The Squid and the Whale. His involvement suggests that Visalia and Capture the Flag may lean closer to character-driven adult dramas than the franchise filmmaking dominating Sheridan’s current workload.

No directors, cast members, production dates, or distributors have been announced for either project.

The phrase “after his Yellowstone exit” needs a little untangling. Sheridan has signed a major film and television agreement with NBCUniversal, but his Paramount television contract remains active through the end of 2028. His move to NBCUniversal is expected to take full effect in 2029, while the film portion began earlier. TheWrap reported that his Paramount film arrangement concluded in March 2026, giving him more freedom to develop movies elsewhere.

Visalia and Capture the Flag offer an early indication of what that freedom may produce. Neither project belongs to the Yellowstone universe, and neither has been announced as a television extension designed to feed an existing streaming platform. Sheridan is returning to the medium that established his reputation before John Dutton occupied nearly every corner of his career.

His earlier screenplays include Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Hell or High Water earned Sheridan an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, while Wind River marked his feature directing debut. Those movies built their tension through economic pressure, violence, and difficult moral choices, all ingredients that could fit these new concepts without making either film resemble a Western.

Sheridan already has other movies underway. He wrote Warner Bros.’ action thriller F.A.S.T., starring Brandon Sklenar and scheduled for theatrical release on April 23, 2027. The film follows a former Special Forces operative recruited to lead a DEA strike team against drug traffickers protected by the CIA. He is also co-writing Paramount’s live-action Call of Duty adaptation with director Peter Berg. The film will take place within the game franchise’s Modern Warfare universe and is scheduled to reach theatres on June 30, 2028.

Sheridan, Berg, 101 Studios’ David Glasser, and Activision president Rob Kostich are producing. Variety confirmed the setting, while the studio announced the date during CinemaCon.

Sheridan’s television workload is not disappearing during this transition. Paramount+ continues to carry his existing and upcoming programs, including Landman, Lioness, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, The Madison, and the Samuel L. Jackson-led Frisco King. Paramount’s official Sheridan collection confirms that several remain active while his contract runs down.
