Movies with superheroes have evolved from kid-friendly adaptations to blockbuster franchises that earn billions. The success of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and the rise of the MCU gave the genre a seriousness, making them huge box office draw.
Many solo superheroes have had solo franchises, even under the overall cinematic universes. The MCU alone has had multiple heroes release more than 4 movies (now that even the X-Men and previous Spider-Man movies have come under the MCU).
Here are all the superheroes who have had more than 4 solo outings and their worldwide box office rankings.
[Note all numbers and figures reported here are as of June 3rd, 2026]
12 The Toxic Avenger – $4.6 Million
Peter Dinklage in The Toxic Avenger | Credits: Troma EntertainmentLloyd Kaufman’s The Toxic Avenger franchise is the definition of a cult hit. The first film, released in 1984, was not a huge box office success, but the film caught on through midnight screenings. More than a superhero film, it is a comedy.
Five live-action films have been released in the franchise, including a 2025 reboot starring Peter Dinklage. While the first film’s box office is not clear, the second film earned $792K (via Box Office Mojo), while the third earned $363K (via Box Office Mojo).
With the 2025 reboot earning $3.4 million (via Box Office Mojo), the franchise has earned a total of $4.6 million across five movies, making it the lowest-grossing superhero franchise with 4+ live-action movies in this list.

11 The Crow – $92.9 Million
Brandon Lee in The Crow | Credits: Miramax FilmsJames O’Barr’s The Crow comic book came out of his own grief of losing his fiancée in an accident. The film adaptation starring Brandon Lee was notorious for the on-set death of its star. Still, the gothic superhero franchise has received several sequels and a recent reboot as well.
The 1994 film starring Lee remains the most successful film of the franchise, earning $50.7 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). While the second and third sequels earned under $25 million, the fourth film, The Crow: Salvation, was released directly to video. The 2024 reboot earned only $24.2 million at the box office, bringing the franchise total to $92.9 million (via Box Office Mojo).

10 Hellboy – $335 Million
Ron Perlman in Hellboy | Credits: Sony Pictures ReleasingThe first two Hellboy films were cinematic gold. With Guillermo Del Toro at the helm and Ron Perlman taking over the titular role, the film blended gothic imagery with the punk rock aesthetic of the early 2000s.
However, after the second film, The Golden Army’s disappointing box office performance (it is still an incredible movie), the franchise underwent two reboots, one in 2019 with the amazingly awful Hellboy, and then in 2023 with The Crooked Man.
The first and second films earned $99.8 million and $160.3 million, respectively, while the reboots earned $53.9 million and $1.4 million, respectively, bringing the franchise total to around $335 million (via The Numbers).

9 RoboCop – $352.4 Million
Peter Weller in RoboCop | Credits: Orion PicturesThe RoboCop franchise is the peak of 80s science fiction. Blending action with existential dread, the franchise centers on the deceased Alex Murphy, who is revived to be a law-enforcing cyborg. The suit is iconic, and the movie has spawned multiple sequels, video games, comics, merchandise, and a reboot, all set in a distant future.
The first film was a huge success at the box office, earning $53.4 million (via Box Office Mojo). Other films in the franchise were less successful, though the 2014 reboot earned $242.9 million, bringing the franchise total to $352.4 million (via The Numbers).

8 Zorro – $392.6 Million
Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro | Credits: TriStar PicturesThe swashbuckler franchise centered on the masked vigilante named Zorro has had multiple iterations throughout the years. There are the Douglas Fairbanks movies, parodies, silent films, and musicals, but the central few films are what we will be looking at. Starting with the 1940 film The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power, the franchise got a major update with Antonio Banderas taking over the sword and mask.
The 1940 film earned just $10K at the box office, while the Antonio Banderas-starring reboot earned $233.7 million and $141.4 million, respectively (via The Numbers). These reboots have significantly contributed to the franchise’s box office ranking, bringing the total to $392. 6 million.

7 Hulk – $510.1 Million
Lou Ferrigno in The Incredible Hulk Returns | Credits: NBCThe Hulk is one of the most popular superheroes from the Marvel universe. Several actors have tried their hands at playing the brute, beginning with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno’s depiction in the television series of the ‘70s. The same duo reprised their roles as Dr. Bruce Banner and the Hulk in three TV films.
The box office performance of the TV films, namely, The Incredible Hulk Returns, The Trial of the Incredible Hulk, and The Death of the Incredible Hulk, is nil, as they were directly released on TV. The character finally got his theatrical debut with Ang Lee’s 2003 film Hulk, which earned $245 million, while his MCU debut, The Incredible Hulk, earned $265.5 million (The Numbers).
There have been no solo movies featuring the Hulk since then, though Mark Ruffalo has made several appearances as the brute hero in many MCU team-up movies.
| Superhero Name | Number of Movies | Total Box Office | Streaming |
| Hulk | 5 | $510.1 Million | Disney+ |
6 Superman – $2.3 Billion
The epitome of what a superhero is, unfortunately, ranks quite low on the list of the highest-grossing live-action solo movies. Superman has been on the theatre screen since 1978, though he made his TV debut much earlier. Christopher Reeve’s portrayal became the definitive version of the American superhero, but subsequent versions have fandoms of their own.
Richard Donner’s Superman became a game-changer in the superhero franchise, earning $300.2 million at the box office. The three sequels earned less, while the 2006 film, Superman Returns, earned $391 million. Man of Steel and James Gunn’s Superman earned $667 and $618 million, respectively, bringing the franchise total to $2.3 billion (via The Numbers).

| Superman | 7 | $2.3 Billion | HBO Max |
5 Captain America – $2.6 Billion
Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger | Credits: Marvel StudiosSteve Rogers was known only to comic book fans before his MCU debut made him a tier-1 superhero. His live-action solo debut happened with the 2011 MCU film, The First Avenger, which earned only $370 million. However, the franchise has had a meteoric rise since then, especially with Civil War, which was basically a mini-Avengers film.
Sequels like The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Brave New World saw varied levels of box office success, bringing the franchise total to $2.6 billion. Civil War itself earned $1.15 billion (via The Numbers).

| Captain America | 5 | $2.6 Billion | Disney+ |
4 Wolverine – $2.7 Billion
Hugh Jackman in Logan | Credits: 20th Century FoxHugh Jackman’s Wolverine is to date the definitive live-action version of the character. Few actors have embodied a role like Jackman through the X-Men films, and now in the MCU. Wolverine’s solo effort came with the divisive X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which earned $374 million at the box office.
James Mangold’s The Wolverine performed better both critically and commercially, and his Logan earned $614.2 million at the box office. While the fourth movie was a team-up film with Deadpool, Deadpool & Wolverine can definitely be considered in the list as he has equal stakes in the project, which earned $1.3 billion (via The Numbers).
| Superhero Name | Number of Movies | Total Box Office | Streaming |
| Wolverine | 4 | $2.7 Billion | Disney+ |
3 Thor – $2.7 Billion
Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok | Credits: Marvel StudiosChris Hemsworth’s Thor franchise has earned roughly the same as Wolverine. However, the reason for his higher ranking is that he did it within a lesser timeframe and with 4 fully solo projects (unlike Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool & Wolverine). Much like Captain America, Thor was not on the level of Spider-Man in the mainstream, but is now one of the most popular superheroes.
The first Thor film earned $449 million at the box office, but the next two sequels earned better than the last, with Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok earning a whopping $850.4 million. Love and Thunder, however, did not fare as well, earning $760.9 million. But the franchise still earned a total of $2.7 billion (via The Numbers).
| Superhero Name | Number of Movies | Total Box Office | Streaming |
| Thor | 4 | $2.7 Billion | Disney+ |
2 Batman – $4.49 Billion
Michael Keaton in Batman | Credits: Warner Bros.Batman is one of the most popular superheroes of all time. Several actors have donned the cape and cowl in the past few decades, with Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne being the first major milestone for the franchise (Adam West still originated from TV). 8 live-action films have been made with the Caped Crusader, and a 9th one (The Batman: Part II) is in production.
From 1989’s Batman to Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, the franchise has earned $4.49 billion at the box office. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises both crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office (via The Numbers).
| Superhero Name | Number of Movies | Total Box Office | Streaming |
| Batman | 8 | $4.49 Billion | HBO Max |
1 Spider-Man – $7.8 Billion
The top spot is no surprise as Spider-Man is the most popular superhero of all time. The web slinger has had multiple reboots, all of them extremely popular, and has a fourth Tom Holland solo movie releasing this year, with Brand New Day. All of the movies have crossed the $500 million mark, making Spider-Man the highest-grossing superhero.
With 9 movies across 24 years, the Spider-Man franchise has earned $7.8 billion at the box office. Both Far From Home and No Way Home have crossed the $1 billion mark, while the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield franchises have been quite profitable on their own (via The Numbers).
Several spinoff films have also been released by Sony, but none are as profitable as Spider-Man.
| Superhero Name | Number of Movies | Total Box Office | Streaming |
| Spider-Man | 9 | $7.8 Billion | Disney+ |
Superhero movies will always be profitable as they have grown beyond their kid-friendly image. Heroes such as Spider-Man and Batman have made themselves future-proof by constantly reinventing while also staying true to the roots of their characters. They might just always remain on top.
| Superhero | Number of Movies | Worldwide Box Office | Timeline |
| Spider-Man | 9 | $7.8 Billion | 2002-2026 |
| Batman | 8 | $4.49 Billion | 1989-2022 |
