A 27-year-old Stoney Creek man faces charges for allegedly posting hate-related content online earlier this summer.

Hamilton Police say they received a report in July concerning content posted publicly to an account on the social media platform X.

The report prompted Hate Crime Unit officers to launch an investigation into the X account and the material being shared, police said in a statement released on Saturday.

Investigators subsequently identified Simran Mander as the individual believed to be operating the account.

“Following the required consent of the Attorney General to proceed with charges, Mander was arrested on Sept. 9 and charged with wilful promotion of hatred, wilful promotion of antisemitism, and advocating genocide,” police said.

Police have not revealed details of the content that was allegedly shared on social media. However, the charges suggest the material that was allegedly shared online was directed at the Jewish community.

The charges laid against Mander have not been proven in court.

“Hamilton Police recognize the significant impact hate crimes and hate incidents can have on individuals, targeted communities and the broader community,” police said, adding they “remain committed to investigating hate-motivated incidents and holding those responsible accountable.”
