Star City Episode 5 Ending Explained: What Is Valya’s Plan?

Star City Episode 5 dealt with the aftermath of figuring out who the mole of the space mission is. With Irina piecing the puzzle at the end of Episode 4, this episode saw Valya’s identity as an American spy exposed. In a desperate attempt to hide from the KGB, he subdues Pavel and takes his place on the nine-month mission to Venus as his plan to hide.

The Venus mission twist sees a radical development because of Valya, and now the Chief Designer’s organized plan has a fugitive. Tanya rejects Valya’s plea to flee with her, forcing him to either surrender himself to the worst that the USSR has shown in Season 1 of Star City or hide out on another planet.

Venus Becomes the Hideout Spot

The Chief Designer has been setting up the Venus mission since the start of the spinoff show Star City, wanting to push the USSR’s space race to dominate another planet after successfully landing on the moon. With the secret mission going through multiple security checks by Raskova and the KGB, somehow, the Chief Designer is able to launch.

Valya views this as the perfect opportunity to hide out as a fugitive, given the nine-month flight period of the mission. He will be out of reach from KGB operatives, but there is always a chance that they may infiltrate and ruin the mission like Raskova did at the end of Episode 3.

Valya actor Adam Nagaitis describes this move in an exclusive with Syfy:

Nagaitis went on to explain that Valya’s mindset is doomed after his life crumbled in an instant. He does not have Tanya or his career anymore. His life was in the hands of the most ruthless commanders. As Nagaitis said, it is safer for Valya to be on Venus than in the USSR.

Episode 5: The Aftermath of a Shocking Twist

Episode 5 sees Irina making the conscious choice of warning Tanya about her husband being the American mole. She hopes to save her from the horrific punishments she has witnessed firsthand. The Soviets are not kind to traitors and do anything to bury secrets.

Irina manages to convince Tanya to flee to a safe house in Moscow with explicit instructions not to contact Valya. However, she does so anyway. It truly was devastating to see that Valya was forced into the situation he was in because he wanted to save Tanya.

With Tanya’s refusal to run away with Valya, the man naturally felt doomed. Meanwhile, Sasha and Anastasia’s night of passion leaves him in a state of dilemma. He is on his way to the secret mission, but Anastasia does not get all the details.

With Valya taking on Pavel’s position, the next episode will reveal an interesting twist as Sasha finds out about the events. The Chief Designer will have direct communication with the flight, meaning that as secrets get exposed on a large scale, what will everyone do? Protect the state or further research?
