Spider-Man: Brand New Day, ever since it was released, has put an end to the claim that there is a thing called “superhero fatigue”. Well, at least as far as Spidey is concerned, the concept doesn’t exist. The Tom Holland-led MCU movie has shattered numerous box office records, including becoming the second-fastest movie to cross the $1 billion mark, and it has been out for less than a week in the US. And now, the movie has created another impressive milestone, and this one is quite interesting.
According to the community ratings over at Letterboxd, it is now the highest-rated live-action Spider-Man movie. More importantly, Brand New Day beat Sam Raimi-directed and Tobey Maguire-starrer Spider-Man 2 (2004) for the top spot. Spider-Man 2 is widely regarded as the definitive Spider-Man movie, at least in live-action, so this is some achievement.

Brand New Day Is Now Letterboxd’s Top Live-Action Spider-Man Movie

It has millions of users who log movies and then rate and review them. And they can be rather ruthless. To give you an idea, Denis Villeneuve’s original Dune (2021), which we can all agree is widely beloved, has a score of 3.9 out of 5 (via Letterboxd) as of August 5, 2026.
At the moment, as of August 5, 2026, Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, holds a rating of 4.14, which is impressive enough on its own. But it is also more than Spider-Man 2’s 3.94. Now, it is a matter of subjective opinion as to which movie is better, really, but judging by the reviews and incredible box office figures, Brand New Day is one of the best movies featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Spider-Man 2, for more than two decades now, has been considered the best live-action experience Spider-Man has to offer. The first Spider-Man (2002) was no slouch, but it was the second one where Raimi and Maguire were at the top of their game. It had a nearly perfect balance between superhero spectacle and grounded and emotional storytelling. Alfred Molina‘s Doctor Octopus, to date, remains one of the smartest villains in superhero movies. To have Brand New Day ranked better than Spider-Man 2, however briefly, is quite extraordinary.
Brand New Day brings back Holland’s Peter Parker or Spider-Man, who was rendered anonymous by a spell performed by Doctor Strange. Living a lonely life without friends or anybody to call his own, Spider-Man faces new threats as there is a mysterious and powerful entity who improbably appears to know his real identity. The movie is being considered by many as Holland’s best solo performance as Spider-Man. This achievement comes after Brand New Day set an earlier Letterboxd record.

Based on the latest Letterboxd averages, here’s how every live-action Spider-Man movie currently ranks (via Letterboxd) as of August 5, 2026:

It must be noted that the above list features only live-action Spider-Man movies. The top positions are hogged by the two Spider-Verse movies: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). I think that’s only fair, because Sony’s animated movies are regarded as two of the best superhero movies ever made. They feature groundbreaking animation, emotionally resonant storytelling, and a fresh new Spider-Man in Miles Morales.
Comparing them to live-action media is like comparing two different mediums. It is not fair to either of them.
It remains to be seen whether it can hold the top spot. Of course, the current rating may be due to recency bias, and it will likely go down as time goes by. But at the moment, it is remarkable. As more and more movie buffs watch and rate the movie over the coming weeks and months, its score could shift, and it will probably come down. But wherever it settles, it will remain remarkable.
