It has been more than a decade since George R.R. Martin has been writing The Winds of Winter. And year after year, he has been promising that the book is coming along well and will be released soon. But here we are at the end of 2024 and the book is nowhere to be found.

However, the upcoming book is not the only book to have faced this issue, and the last few installments have met similar fates. This has led to fans crafting weird theories and rumors about the author, which Martin once famously debunked by blaming it on ‘lunatic fans.’

George R.R. Martin, at least since 2010, has been writing the next book in A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Over the years, the accomplished author has promised more than a dozen times that the book is in the process of being written and will be out soon. However, it has been more than a decade and The Winds of Winter is nowhere to be found.

While this has inevitably led to a hoard of memes and criticism, Martin being unable to complete the book even after all this time has led to some wild theories. The most popular of these theories is that the author has completed the book but is withholding its release to manipulate demand and inflate profits.

However, this is far from the truth as the author himself once blasted this rumor in an interview with Feather Factor.

There’s some weird theories out there, about my books. The books (A Song of Ice and Fire series) take a lot time to write as you know – and the last one [A Dance of Dragons] was seriously late. I’ve read some crazy theories on the internet about the delay. Lunatic fans who think I finished writing four years earlier and was just sitting on the finished book to drive the price up. Or that I was just hiding it away. Clearly some people know nothing about publishing.

Thus, dismissing all these claims for good, the author made it clear that delays are a result of the creative process and the immense time and dedication needed to craft a book of such complexity. While fans continue to joke about the same even after his explanation, The Winds of Winter remains elusive for now.

George R.R. Martin exclaims The Winds of Winter remains his priority

Ever since the last book in A Song of Ice and Fire book series was released, George R.R. Martin has been consistent in his promise of delivering the next part of the book series. Yet, it has been more than 13 years and The Winds of Winter is still being written.

Fans claim that at this rate any other author would have fished out an entire book series. However, that is not to be the case with Martin. After already having promised the book about a couple dozen times, the author, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter stated that it is still a priority.

Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time. But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!

Given Martin’s age and health, it has always been a fear among fans that the author might not make it before the final two books are released. While The Winds of Winter so far has taken 13 years to be written and is still being written, if the author continues on this path he might well be in his 90s before the final installment, A Dream of Spring is released.
