Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are bringing back The Littlest Hobo to Canadian TV.

The live-action reboot of the series is the first project to emerge out of Bell Media’s partnership with Crave, Lionsgate Canada and the duo’s Point Grey Pictures company. It also marks Rogen and Goldberg’s first scripted show for the Canadian market.

The new venture expands on Lionsgate and Point Grey Pictures’ multi-year partnership, which had its first smash-hit program with The Studio for Apple TV. The series won 13 Emmy awards, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA honours.

The Littlest Hobo originally aired from 1963 to 1965 in syndication before being revived by CTV for its most well-known version from 1979 to 1985. It followed the adventures of a super-smart, ownerless German shepherd wandering across the vastness of Canada helping people in need. It was one of the country’s most beloved and popular programs during its run.

And a who’s-who of Canadian talent appeared in the series, which became a kind of rite of passage for viewers.

Almost as important as The Littlest Hobo’s return is the question of who will compose the new theme song. Singer Terry Bush’s song, Maybe Tomorrow, has also become a Canuck classic through the show.

In a news release announcing the project, Rogen and Goldberg described the series as ‘foundational’ to their childhoods and noted they have big plans for the reimagined live-action version in production.

“We are thrilled to have the honour of bringing it back for a new generation alongside our partners at Crave. And though the hobo may be little, we promise big things to come. That doesn’t mean the dog will be huge like Clifford. The hobo will still be little. But the adventures will be big,” they said.

A spokesperson for Bell Media said having Rogen and Goldberg at the helm of the return of such a classic is a perfect choice. Their track record as proven hitmakers, along with their B.C. roots, will help create an authentic Canadian reboot.

Further details on casting, production and the screening premiere are to be announced. There is no word yet whether Rogen’s Cavalier King Charles spaniel Ada will be making a guest appearance during the show.
