The Ottawa Senators’ blueliner, who suffered a concussion after a hit to the head from Taylor Hall in Game 3 of the club’s four-game sweep by the Carolina Hurricanes in Round 1 of the playoffs, was named one of three finalists for the Lady Byng Trophy on Wednesday.

The Lady Byng is presented annually to the player judged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.

Sanderson, who had eight penalty minutes in 67 games this season, was one of the top three vote-getters, along with Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens and Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings.

Kopitar, who is hanging up his skates after winning two Stanley Cup championships in his legendary career, has won the Lady Byng three times, including last season.

Fans of the Senators are waiting with bated breath to find out if Sanderson, who had 14 goals and 54 points this season, will get the nod as one of the NHL’s top three defencemen when the Calder Trophy finalists are announced on Tuesday.

The voting for both of those awards is done by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

The league will announce the top three candidates for the NHL’s coach of the year award, and Travis Green was certainly in the conversation after the club made a late-season push to make the playoffs.
