During the making of Ridley Scott’s 2000 Oscar-winning epic Gladiator, there was significant pressure from the studio and producers to insert intimate scenes between Russell Crowe’s protagonist Maximus and the female characters, particularly Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen. Crowe recalled the incident at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy and said:
When we were shooting that film, there was a lot of pressure. The studio, the producers [thought] there should be sex between Maximus and the female characters. I kept pushing back. This is the story of a man avenging the death of his wife and his child. There cannot be a moment in that journey where he stops and has s*x with somebody. It doesn’t make any sense because that destroys the journey.(Via Fox News)
Director Ridley Scott, who reportedly would have loved to film a romantic or bed scene between Crowe and Nielsen, ultimately agreed with Crowe’s position.
Russell Crowe Slams Gladiator II for Missing the Same Moral Core
Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator | Credits: DreamWorks PicturesThe same actor who fought to protect the original’s emotional foundation has now publicly criticized Gladiator II for lacking that exact quality. In a candid interview with Australia’s Triple J radio station(via BBC), Crowe said the sequel’s creative team “did not actually understand what made the first one special.”
He explained:
It wasn’t the pomp. It wasn’t the circumstance. It wasn’t the action. It was the moral core.
Crowe specifically targeted the sequel’s revelation that Paul Mescal’s protagonist Lucius is the illegitimate son of Maximus and Lucilla, a plot twist he calls “crazy” and one that contradicts the emotional core he fought to protect two decades ago.
Crowe has also emphasized that the original Gladiator appealed strongly to female audiences because “it’s not about revenge, it is about vengeance,” a distinction he considers crucial—and because it didn’t feature gratuitous sex scenes. The actress who played Lucilla, Connie Nielsen, was integral to that emotional dynamic without crossing into physical intimacy that would have undermined Maximus’s quest for justice. (Via Fox News)
