Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains major spoilers for Rose of Nevada, including details about the film's ending, time-slip mystery, and the fates of Nick and Liam.
Rose of Nevada has Nick (George MacKay) and Liam (Callum Turner) stranded in 1993 after a mysterious voyage aboard the titular fishing vessel. Nick desperately searches for a way back to his wife and daughter in the present. But Liam has nothing going on in life, and he gradually embraces his new life in the past. This creates a divide that drives the film’s final act.
The time jump also raises a larger mystery in this contemplative movie (it is already one of 2026’s best sci-fi flicks). After arriving in 1993, the two men are mistaken for fishermen who originally disappeared aboard the Rose of Nevada (the ship) decades earlier. The villagers welcome them back as lost sons, husbands, and friends, and Nick and Liam are assumed (or they really are) to be two of the disappeared fishermen. The two men are forced to decide whether to fight their new reality or accept the lives history seems to have chosen for them. Let’s dive in. But first, here’s a summary:

At the end of this sci-fi movie, Nick and Liam remain trapped in 1993, with Nick continuing to search for a way home while Liam chooses to build a life in the past. The time jump completely alters the course of both men’s lives. Nick is horrified by what has happened because he has left behind a wife and young daughter in the present. All attempts to make people believe that he is not who they think him to be fall on deaf ears.
Liam reacts very differently. Unlike Nick, he has little waiting for him in the future. He was an itinerant worker who arrived in the village and slept on the docks. Rather than fighting the situation, he gradually settles into the role assigned to him by the village. He accepts the affection and familiarity offered by those around him and begins to adapt to a life that technically belonged to somebody else.
Throughout the final act, Nick searches for answers while grappling with the possibility that he may never see his family again. The film also introduces clues suggesting that the strange events may not be random. The warning carved into the boat (“Get Off the Boat Now”) takes on greater significance. It is hinting that the cycle may have happened before or is destined to happen again.
Rather than offering a neat explanation, the ending is quite sudden and vague. It ends just when most movies would give an explanation and a whole lot of exposition. But perhaps the movie is not about giving answers. It is about the lives of two men in a dying Cornish fishing village. The mystery of the Rose of Nevada remains unresolved. The emotional consequences of the time jump, though, become painfully clear.
Why Does Liam Decide to Stay in 1993?
Callum Turner as Liam in Rose of Nevada | Credits: Head Gear FilmsThe reason why Liam decides to stay in 1993 is that he does not have as much to lose as Nick. Scratch that. He doesn’t have anything to lose. Liam was initially introduced as a character who lacked any connections in his life before going aboard the Rose of Nevada. With the unexpected passage of time, he finds himself amidst a vibrant community where he feels valued and respected.
While Nick sees the past as a prison separating him from the people he loves, Liam sees an opportunity to become someone else. The role forced upon him comes with relationships, responsibility, and a sense of belonging.
As Nick views the past as a prison that keeps him away from those people whom he loves, Liam views the past as an opportunity that allows him to become somebody new. The character and the responsibilities attached to it offer him something he can relate to. As a result, the same situation that feels like a tragedy to one man feels almost like a second chance to the other.
In the end, Liam seems ready to abandon his old self completely. Whether it is a selfish, understandable, or tragic act is up to the audience to judge, but it is exactly the conflict that drives the ending.
Are Nick and Liam Replacing the Original Missing Fishermen?
George MacKay as Liam in Rose of Nevada | Credits: Head Gear FilmsThe short answer is, we don’t know. The long answer? As was noted above, the two men arrive in 1993 and are immediately recognized by the villagers as the missing guys of the crew. The longer they stay in the past, the harder it is to distinguish between who they really are and how they are recognized by the villagers as they are now.
Several clues in the film point out to a closed time loop. Perhaps the best example is the aforementioned inscription on the boat, which warns the men to get off. Several hints suggest that Nick himself can be behind the warning that connects the past, present, and the future.
One can raise a disturbing question: perhaps all the thirty-year-old mystery of missing men in the village had something to do with the two men? And perhaps they are not replacing the original crew. They are the original crew. Or perhaps not. It’s a mystery that fans of Netflix’s Dark (one of the best sci-fi shows about time-travel, by the way) would appreciate even if, unlike Dark, we do not get the answers.
Mark Jenkin ends the movie without a clear answer to the question, and the movie doesn’t suffer for it. For it is a meditative movie that is rendered all the better by its deliberate pace. The sci-fi movie does not show how this travel occurred and does not clarify the issue of the possibility of changing history. However, the consequences of the mystery on the main characters are described in great detail, and that is what the movie is really about. Nick is losing his familiar world, while Liam finds another one.
What did you make of Rose of Nevada‘s ending? Do you think Nick and Liam were truly replacing the missing fishermen, or were they the missing fishermen?
