Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 10 SPOILER Recap: “Field of Dreams”

Rick and Morty Season 9 finally comes to a close with the tenth episode, “Field of Dreams.” How will this honestly stellar season wrap up? Will it involve any Kevin Costner or baseball references as alluded to by the title? And will the ending give any hints as to what’s to come in Season 10? All these questions and more will be answered in our full spoiler breakdown of “Field of Dreams.” This is your final warning if you haven’t seen the finale for yourself yet, so without further ado, let’s dive right in.

What happens in Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 10 “Field of Dreams”?

We open on Rick and Morty…. dying from overly spicy chili when a portal opens, and a Rick dressed like a ringmaster declares the start of an estate sale. Soon, several Ricks and Mortys from several different universes, including ours, show up to claim this Smith family’s various belongings as their own. Weirded out by the whole thing, Morty tries to chill in a corner while he waits for his Rick to finish up when he meets a Morty with sunglasses who apparently came to “funeral hop,” a practice in which you travel to different universes to attend your own funeral and hear the nicest things your family and friends will ever say about you.

Sunglasses Morty also does this without his Rick, using his own portal device called a Portal Junior. They then find Chili Morty’s version of the device, which Sunglasses Morty graciously gifts to our Morty before he and Rick head out with a rotating motorcycle platform. After the title card, though no theme song, Morty asks Rick if he should try funeral hopping, to which Rick responds that he doesn’t care while spinning on top of a rotating motorcycle seemingly placed here specifically so they could show off some 3D animation.

Morty then travels to a plethora of different universes to attend a plethora of different versions of his own funeral, my personal favorite being the goth universe where ravens ritually eat his corpse, before stopping at a version where he was a star student and athlete who went by Mort. After Mort’s seemingly perfect suburban family catches Morty at Mort’s grave, Morty explains the multiverse to them as, in this reality, Beth and Jerry cut ties with Rick before Summer was born. Morty enjoys a cozy night in with the family before realizing he needs to return home, with Suburban Jerry giving him a copy of the house keys if he ever wants to stop by.

Morty briefly returns to his home universe and is given a stark reminder of how much everything sucks for him there. He then returns to the suburban universe, and we get a montage of Morty spending quality time with his idealized family, ending with Jerry and Morty heading up to spend the weekend in the family’s log cabin in the woods. While there, Jerry asks Morty to agree to be his new son permanently. Morty initially agrees but hesitates after Jerry insists he do so by breaking the Portal Junior.

Jerry then does so by force and quickly reveals himself to be a paranoid survivalist who forced Mort to train to survive anything, including the mountain climb that ultimately killed him. Morty runs into the woods and finds a duffel bag of money, food, and clothes left behind by Mort before his death. He uses these to survive and eventually track down this universe’s Rick, a tenured physics professor at MIT whose portal technology is still theoretical. Upon meeting Morty, Rick is determined to perfect his portal tech in order to get him home, with the encouragement of his second wife Julie, played by special guest star Malin Akerman.

In this timeline, Rick still lost Diane, but he’s been off alcohol and regularly attending AA meetings since his daughter left 17 years prior. Unfortunately, Rick’s drive to finish the portal and frustrations with his repeated failures ultimately drives him back to alcoholism and Julie leaves him the night before he manages to finish a potentially stable prototype. However, the rest of the evidently psychotic Smith family track Rick and Morty down, with Jerry doing everything he can to ensure Morty doesn’t go through the portal for his own safety. Rick insists that it’s perfectly safe only for Jerry to be proven right when a raccoon is thrown in and emerges having turned inside out.

A fight breaks out between Rick and the Smith family that ends with the portal completely destabilizing and Jerry, Rick, and Summer all dying horribly. Unable to withstand the horror, Beth stabs herself to death with a glass shard as Morty looks on in stunned silence at the carnage. Then, the ringmaster Rick returns, declaring another estate sale, as our Rick arrives with the crowd of other Ricks and Mortys to take our Morty home. When Morty gets back, he tells his oblivious mother and sister that he loves them before riding off into the sunset on a motorcycle with Rick, as the pair declare they are father and son.

But at this point, it wouldn’t be a Rick and Morty season finale without a Mr. Poopy Butthole post-credits scene. So, the episode actually ends with his wife Amy using the end-of-season recap version of Mr. Poopy Butthole’s DNA to track down the original version somewhere in the multiverse. She and her crew power up their interdimensional traveling orb, but it zaps off to an unknown universe/potentially oblivion before we get any real answers.

Is Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 10 “Field of Dreams” worth watching?

This was a remarkably strong finale. The funeral-hopping and estate sale hooks were very clever, the tragedy of a stable Rick being corrupted by portal tech was poignant, it’s obviously quite funny, and the main plot of Morty growing tired of his own family but becoming quickly disillusioned by this perfect-at-first but ultimately terrifying version of them was really well done, sort of like Coraline without the supernatural element. I will say I’m getting a bit tired of the Mr. Poopy Butthole ending gags, as I feel the joke with his character has run its course, but that’s an extremely minor nitpick into what is otherwise a fantastic finale to an excellent season of Rick and Morty.
