The second episode of Rent-a-Girlfriend dropped on April 15, and so did our jaws. The anime was first available on DMM TV, and the actual television broadcast follows that by a few days. Mami has finally taken actual initiative in ruining Kazuya’s life by actively scheming instead of just manipulating Kazuya. The episode also featured strong character development, a rare and welcome feature in this anime.

In the first episode of this season, Chizuru practically rejected Kazuya. However, life goes on, and Kazuya realizes that. He looks at Ruka and realizes that it is insane that a girl as cute as her likes him, but the thoughts about Chizuru don’t leave him. He cries a little in the pool, but does his best to actually enjoy the time with his friends.

It is actually nice to see that he is trying to move on, since it’s not exactly the first time he got rejected. His being rejected by Chizuru is such a common occurrence that it has become a running joke in the community of this anime.

Furthermore, he realizes that he has an amazing family and friends in his life. His plan is simple: he will announce to everyone that he broke up with Chizuru, which is another way of making things right. He also realizes that so far, in all 4 seasons, he has been nothing but a huge headache for Chizuru.

What really stands out is that he is not begging Chizuru to pretend to be his girlfriend any longer and is actively trying to take the burden on himself. That is real character development, and it’s something fans of this anime have been waiting for. It is true that he deserved everything happening to him right now, but now, he realizes that.

Mami Is Making Everything Fall Apart

While things are looking healthy for Kazuya, Mami is going down to a new low. Till now, she had been manipulating just Kazuya and Chizuru, trying to break them apart. However, she wanted them to get the truth out themselves.

This time, things are different. Chizuru rejected Mami’s proposal to tell everything to Kazuya’s grandmother, which angered Mami a lot. She opened the web page where people can rent Chizuru, basically her profile that proves that she is a rental girlfriend, and intentionally dropped it in front of Kazuya’s grandmother.

Kazuya’s friend, grandmother, parents, and everyone finally saw that web page. In simple words, there may not be anything that Chizuru and Kazuya can do anymore. Kazuya’s grandmother’s reaction says it all; she is beyond shocked. This reveal was shocking for the viewers as well, as finally, for once, I find myself wondering “what now?”.

Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 5 Episode 2 Final Verdict

This anime is infamous for being quite repetitive. Kazuya would try to make things a bit right, something would happen that would lead him to rent Chizuru once more, and the lie continues. Furthermore, he would get rejected again and again, only to not learn his lesson.

However, this episode broke both cycles. Kazuya is finally trying to move on, make things right the proper way, and take the responsibility for the damage he’s caused. Furthermore, the lie that was the primary factor of this story is out in the open now. It’s going to be interesting to see where the story will go from now on.

As far as this anime is concerned, it was definitely the best episode till now, but then it did feel very slow. Half of the time was spent with Kazuya’s internal monologue, and we didn’t get to see any monologue of Chizuru, which was much needed after her encounter with Mami.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this episode? Let us know in the comments.
