That’s according to a Thursday press release from Canada Post, as the beleaguered crown corporation struggles against record-high costs and decreased demand.

Following initial meetings with its bargaining agents, the Corporation is starting preliminary work on two core initiatives: converting the remaining addresses that receive door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes and modernizing our retail network,” read an excerpt from the release.

Canada Post’s transformation will strengthen the postal service, allow it to be a better partner for businesses, enable national commerce, and help it meet its dual mandate of delivering for all Canadians without being a recurring burden on taxpayers. It’s therefore important the Corporation move forward in a timely manner while working closely with its bargaining agents and the Government of Canada.”

Addresses with postal codes beginning with M9V and M9W, an area roughly stretching east from Hwy. 427 to the Humber River, and from Steeles Ave. W. south to Hwy. 401, will see their door-to-door mail delivery replaced with community mailboxes.

Other areas across Canada that’ll soon be saying goodbye to letter carriers include 30,000 addresses in the eastern portions of Ottawa; 23,000 in metro Vancouver; 19,000 addresses in and around Moncton, NB; 16,000 in portions of Winnipeg, MB; 11,000 in Abbotsford, BC; 7,000 in Sept-Îles, QC; and 6,000 address each in Mission, B.C. and La Prairie and Candiac, QC.

“Most of the addresses selected for this phase of conversion are adjacent to areas that already receive delivery to community mailboxes,” the press release said.

“Canada Post understands converting dense urban core areas poses additional challenges. These areas will be addressed in later stages of the multi-year conversion program.”

While the corporation largely halted door-to-door delivery in new subdivisions over three decades ago, Canada Post says nearly three out of every four Canadians still receive home mail delivery.

Canada Post is also in the midst of reviewing and modernizing their retail locations, gathering usage information and determining where best to use their resources.

“Throughout this process, Canada Post will ensure employees, communities, customers, bargaining agents and local officials are kept informed on changes to postal services in their communities,” the release said.

This move comes just weeks after Canada Post announced they were moving ahead with ending door-to-door delivery, and five months after the federal government lifted a moratorium on new community mailbox installations.

Canada Post facing ‘existential crisis’

Canada Post reported losses of $542 million in the third quarter of last year, and operating losses topping $5 billion since 2018.

Eliminating door-to-door delivery would save around $400 million annually, the corporation has said previously.

Mail delivery costs $279 annually per address, while community mailboxes only cost $157 per year per address.
