The 33-year-old kicker was released by the Canadian Football League team on Thursday, less than four weeks before the start of their 2026 training camp.

“As an organization, we would like to thank Lewis for everything he brought to our football club both on and off the field,” said Shawn Burke, the Redblacks’ vice-president of football operations. “He accomplished so many great achievements during his time here. The accolades and records speak for themselves. He will be forever known as a Redblack great.”

Ward, a former University of Ottawa Gee-Gee, established himself as the most consistent kicker in pro football history late in the past decade.

As a Redblacks rookie in 2018, he started a consecutive field goal streak that carried on until Aug. 17 the next season, when he finally missed a 31-yarder in the first quarter of a game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at TD Place.

He was named the CFL’s top rookie and most outstanding special-teams player for the 2018 season.

Not only does his incredible record of 69 straight three-pointers still stand, but it also dwarfs the National Football League mark of 44 held by Adam Vinatieri.

Ward’s production had declined in recent years, however.

In 2024, he was good on 58 of 66 field-goal attempts for an 87.9 per cent success rate that was sixth in the nine-team league, and last season, his seventh with the Redblacks, he connected on just 35 of 46 for a 76.1 per cent efficiency rating that ranked as the CFL‘s worst.

He also missed two convert attempts in three of the past four seasons.

Redblacks main training camp begins May 10 at TD Place, with rookie camp starting May 6.
