“This driver’s disregard for safety put every occupant of the vehicle at risk,” the Wellington County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police posted on its X page.
OPP officers said the 31-year-old man was pulled over near Fergus, northwest of Guelph, on Wednesday afternoon.
The vehicle was originally pulled over after a licence plate scan revealed the owner of may have been operating the Nissan Pathfinder without valid car insurance.
A dozen occupants in total
When officers checked inside the seven-seat sport utility vehicle, 11 people were crammed inside, with eight of the occupants being children, mostly under the age of 16.
The children were not properly secured or wearing seatbelts, according to police.
The unidentified driver was charged with 15 offences, including careless driving, five counts of driving while a passenger under 16 fails to properly wear a seatbelt, two counts of driving while a passenger under 16 fails to occupy a position with a seatbelt, driving while child passenger is not properly secured and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
“The OPP reminds all motorists and passengers that wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injuries and save lives,” according to the news release. “Before every trip, remember to buckle-up and make road safety a priority.”
