The death of Dr. Vegapunk during the Egghead Island arc has brought with it a major shift in the narrative of One Piece. While fans are sad about Vegapunk’s death, others blame him for the events of Egghead because it was one of his satellites that betrayed him and decided to conspire with the Five Elders.
Fans have questioned Vegapunk’s intentions since the beginning of One Piece, as he was not only deeply involved with the World Government; he was also responsible for a lot of deaths and destruction that were caused by his inventions. Thus, it might be a little difficult for One Piece fans to place him on one side of the story.
However, there is a possibility that Eiichiro Oda might have hidden Vegapunk’s true intentions through his first satellite, Shaka. Shaka was the embodiment of Vegapunk’s goodness, but he was also the only one who kept his real face hidden from others. This in a way proves that Vegapunk was inherently a good person who wanted to keep his goodness hidden.
The “Good” Satellite of Dr. Vegapunk
Out of the seven satellites Dr. Vegapunk had, the only one that was the embodiment of pure goodness was Shaka. Almost every other satellite slipped up in some way, but Shaka was the only one who not only helped the Straw Hat Pirates with pure intentions but also made sure that Vegapunk’s name stayed clean.
It can be stated that Shaka had the most impact on Vegapunk’s life, as he was the first satellite he created. Not only that, he advised him and helped him understand the difference between good and bad whenever he was misdirected from his path. Plus, he was the first one to sacrifice his life for the greater good.
Along with being the only “good” satellite, Shaka was also the most analytical version of Vegapunk. He was quick on his feet and was also the first one to figure out that there was a traitor among the seven satellites.
Shaka Inherited Vegapunk’s True Nature
Although all seven satellites carried one aspect of Vegapunk’s personality, Shaka was probably the only one who inherited Vegapunk’s true nature. This is reflected in the fact that he was the only humanized version who had his face hidden from everyone.
This proves that although Vegapunk was essentially responsible for a lot of negative events in One Piece, he was inherently good. But because he wanted to improve the One Piece world, he chose to hide it and collaborated with the World Government to find out the truth about the world.
If this assumption is correct, then Kizaru’s message to Akainu about killing his best friend becomes even more heartbreaking. He was one of the few good characters who were trying to care for the One Piece world and make it a better place for others to live. He had the motive and the opportunity to side with the World Government, but still, he chose to protect others and gave his life in the process.
