Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains some spoilers from One Piece manga.
Death has always been more than just a shock factor in One Piece. The most important character deaths usually carry deep emotional, thematic, and narrative meaning. However, some characters leave behind a different feeling. Their endings are not just sad – they feel unfair. Whether because of lost potential, unfinished dreams, or sacrifices that went largely unrewarded, these characters felt like they deserved far more than what they got.
From the East Blue arc to the recent revelation in Elbaph, these are the One Piece characters who deserve better endings than what they got.

18 Monet Believed Her Devotion Meant Something Until The End
Monet from the One Piece anime. | Credit: Toei AnimationMonet’s death during the Punk Hazard arc did not have the same gravity as the deaths of Ace and Whitebeard, but it remains one of the most tragic villain endings. Initially introduced as the most loyal servant of Doflamingo, she never even considered doubting the person she gave her life for.
Monet’s fate feels tragic because her loyalty was kind of one-sided. Doflamingo considered his crew as family, but it was an unhealthy type of relationship based on dedication at all costs. Monet herself decided to die for Doflamingo in order to realize his dream. Therefore, her death was not because of betrayal, but due to an environment where loyalty meant giving all but getting nothing in return.
17 Vergo Remained Loyal To A Man Who Saw Him As Disposable
Vergo from the anime One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationVergo’s involvement in Punk Hazard only showed how powerful Doflamingo’s reach was. He built a respected career as a Marine, all while working for the underworld.
What makes Vergo’s loyalty tragic is that it wasn’t reciprocated by the one he gave his life to. Doflamingo did love him, but his love is inherently toxic and destructive. Doflamingo’s “Empire” was built on the idea that the core family would all gladly die to make him the Pirate King, and Doflamingo was perfectly willing to let his favorite people die if it meant his dream survived.
16 Bell-mère Chose Her Daughters Even When It Cost Her Life
Bellemere embracing her adoptive daughters, Nami and Nojiko. | Credit: Toei AnimationThe Arlong Park flashback remains one of One Piece‘s strongest emotional stories, and Bell-mère is a major reason why. Unlike many tragic characters, she was not chasing treasure, power, or adventure.
Her death in Nami’s backstory hurts because it was completely avoidable. Bell-mère could have saved herself by denying her connection to Nami and Nojiko. Instead, she chose motherhood over survival. It is a beautiful moment, but it also leaves the feeling that she deserved years of happiness after everything she sacrificed.
15 Tom Was Punished For The Actions Of Others
Tom from the anime series One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationTom’s story during the Water 7 flashback is one of the clearest examples of injustice in One Piece. His famous belief that ships themselves are never responsible for the people who use them remains one of the series’ most memorable lessons.
The frustrating part is that Tom practiced what he preached. He was a craftsman who took pride in his work, yet the World Government judged him based on Roger’s actions rather than his own. His death feels unfair because his greatest contribution was helping others pursue their dreams.
14 Hiriluk Inspired A Miracle But Never Witnessed It
Dr. Hiriluk from the anime series One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationWhen fans think about Drum Island, Chopper is usually the first character that comes to mind. Yet Hiriluk’s influence is what gives that arc its emotional core.
The tragedy of Hiriluk’s story is not that he failed. It is that he never got to see how successful he was. By the time Chopper joined the Straw Hats and became a doctor capable of helping countless people, Hiriluk was long gone. His dream survived, but the dreamer never got to enjoy it.
13 Otohime Dedicated Her Life To Peace And Was Killed For It
Queen Otohime from the anime series One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationFish-Man Island flashback proved how challenging Otohime’s task was. Where others were concerned about taking their revenge or isolating themselves, she spent years trying to establish peace between fish-men and humans.
What makes it even more tragic is that time ultimately proved Otohime right. Her ideals affected Shirahoshi, Fukaboshi, and the future generations. Ultimately, she won, although she was not around to witness it.
12 Pedro Helped Bring The Dawn But Never Lived To See It
Pedro from the One Piece anime. | Credit: Toei Animation Pedro’s death during the Whole Cake Island arc is one of the most symbolic deaths in the New World era. Unlike many characters, Pedro had been aware of the possibility that his role might be to help someone else reach the goal.
Nevertheless, it feels especially harsh that it ended the way it did. Pedro had spent all his years hoping for a new era and believed in the Straw Hats, but had never gotten a chance to see his work come to life.
11 Candelle Lost The Future She Deserved Before It Began
Candelle’s death in One Piece Chapter 1185. | Credit: ShueishaThe flashbacks in Chapters 1184 and 1185 introduced Candelle as someone very important to Brook’s past. After Prince Reuven rescued Brook, Candelle trained him in swordsmanship, manners, and proper etiquette.
The flashback also shows Candelle as someone who was extremely close to Prince Reuven. And that is what makes her fate so tragic. Chapter 1185 also revealed that she got sick for an extended period after a ship carrying a Celestial Dragon had arrived in Esperia, hinting at a possible World Government link. Candelle’s story is not about failure. It is about potential being erased before it could fully develop. In a series built around dreams, that kind of loss always feels particularly harsh.
10 Reuven Never Got To Become The Leader His Kingdom Needed
The ending panel from One Piece Chapter 1185. | Credit: ShueishaLike Candelle, Reuven’s tragedy comes from unrealized potential. Recent Brooks’ flashback chapters from the Elbaph arc suggest he possessed qualities that could have made him an important leader of Esperia during a difficult era.
Many rulers in One Piece are remembered for their mistakes. Reuven stands out because fans are left wondering what he could have accomplished if circumstances had been different. Sometimes the saddest endings belong to characters whose stories never received the chance to fully unfold.
9 Harald Wanted To Lead Elbaph Forward But Paid The Ultimate Price
Loki attacks King Harald in One Piece Chapter 1170. | Credit: ShueishaThe ongoing Elbaph arc has changed how we initially saw King Harald. The recent revelations involving Prince Loki, along with the other flashbacks, made it clear that Harald was a loved ruler who was trying to lead his country toward prosperity.
This factor adds to the tragedy of the story even further. He was not just another ruler who fell from power, but someone actively trying to transform his nation. It leaves you wondering what Elbaph might have become if he had lived longer.
8 Kuina Was Destined For Greatness But Died Too Soon
Kuina and Zoro from the One Piece anime. | Credit: Toei AnimationKuina’s death still ranks among the earliest tragedies in One Piece, featured in the flashback of Zoro in Chapter 5. It still feels surprisingly emotional even after a thousand chapters.
Unlike Ace, Oden, or Whitebeard, Kuina was never able to live out her dream. Her life ended before she got to begin the journey. Thus, it is really heartbreaking.
7 Cobra Died Because He Refused To Stop Seeking The Truth
Nefertari Cobra, the King of Alabasta from the anime series One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationFor most of the series, Cobra appeared as a respected king, but the Reverie arc made him one of the most tragic figures in the series. Instead of standing aside, he decided to uncover secrets hidden from the world by the World Government.
The reason why his death seems unjust is that his simple desire for knowledge was treated as a crime. Cobra did not want anything except information about his ancestors, and he never even thought about revenge or power.
6 Fisher Tiger Could Free Slaves But Not Escape His Trauma
Fisher Tiger, the founder of the Sun Pirates in One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationFisher Tiger’s flashback during Fish-Man Island remains one of the most mature stories Oda has ever written. His accomplishments as a liberator were extraordinary, yet they never erased the pain he carried.
Many stories suggest that defeating oppressors automatically heals emotional wounds. Fisher Tiger proves otherwise. Even after freeing countless slaves, he struggled to overcome the hatred created by his own suffering. That complexity makes his death one of the most tragic in the series.
5 Oden Was Meant To Change Wano But Never Got The Chance
Kozuki Oden from the anime One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationThe Wano flashback spanning Chapters 960 through 974 constantly positions Oden as a man standing at the center of history. His association with Roger made it feel as though he was destined to lead Wano into a new era himself.
That is why his execution in Chapter 972 feels so frustrating. Oden’s dream ultimately survives, but he never gets to enjoy the future he spent years fighting for. The next generation finishes his work, but that does not make his loss hurt any less.
4 Corazon Gave His Life So Law Could Have One
Corazon from One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationLaw’s flashback during the Dressrosa arc changed everyone’s perception of Corazon. He was introduced in One Piece as a side character and left as one of the favorites.
His death stands out because he threw away his own future for a single child. He saves Law, alters the course of history, and inspires a pirate who becomes a defining figure of the New World. While Corazon never lived to see the global impact of his actions or enjoy a peaceful life of his own, he died with a smile on his face – knowing that his love had successfully saved Law from the dark.
3 Whitebeard Died Fighting For The Family He Built
Edward Newgate, better known as “Whitebeard” in One Piece. | Credit: Toei AnimationWhitebeard’s final stand during Marineford is legendary for good reason. Chapters 575 and 576 cemented him as one of the greatest figures in One Piece history.
Yet beneath the spectacle lies a deeply sad story. Whitebeard never cared about becoming Pirate King. His true dream was to have a family. Watching Ace die before his own death means he ultimately lost the person he crossed the world to save. For someone who valued family above everything else, that feels devastating.
2 Kuma Sacrificed His Humanity To Protect Others

Kuma stands out because of how much he sacrificed. He lost his freedom, memories, identity, and eventually his humanity. Most heroes receive some reward for their kindness. Kuma only seemed to suffer more every time he chose to do the right thing.
1 Ace Finally Learned He Was Loved Before Losing Everything
Ace’s death during Marineford in Chapter 574 remains one of the defining moments of One Piece. What makes it so effective is that it resolves his emotional conflict at the exact moment he dies.
For years, Ace struggled with whether someone carrying Roger’s blood deserved to exist at all. By Marineford, he finally understood how much he was loved by Whitebeard, Luffy, and the people around him. The tragedy is that he reached that realization only moments before losing his life. More than any other character in One Piece, Ace feels like someone who had finally found happiness just as it was taken away.
Here is a quick overview of all the characters we have mentioned above –
| 1 | Portgas D. Ace | He finally learned he was loved before losing everything |
| 2 | Bartholomew Kuma | He sacrificed his freedom, memories, and humanity for others |
| 3 | Whitebeard | He lost Ace before making his final stand |
| 4 | Corazon | He gave everything to save Law and received nothing in return |
| 5 | Kozuki Oden | He never got to see the future he fought to create |
| 6 | Fisher Tiger | He could not overcome the scars left by his suffering |
| 7 | Nefertari Cobra | He was murdered for seeking the truth |
| 8 | Kuina | Her journey ended before she could pursue her dream |
| 9 | Harald | His vision for Elbaph ended with his death |
| 10 | Reuven | He never got the chance to become the leader he could have been |
| 11 | Candelle | Her future was taken before it could fully begin |
| 12 | Pedro | He helped bring the dawn but never saw it himself |
| 13 | Queen Otohime | She was killed before witnessing the peace she fought for |
| 14 | Dr. Hiriluk | He never lived to see his dream fulfilled |
| 15 | Tom | He was punished for crimes he never committed |
| 16 | Bell-mère | She sacrificed everything for her daughters |
| 17 | Vergo | He died serving a man who saw him as expendable |
| 18 | Monet | Her loyalty to Doflamingo was never truly valued |
