Obsession Ending Explained: What Happens to Nikki in the End?

Curry Barker’s feature directorial debut, Obsession, has become a horror sensation. Made on a budget of just $1 million, the movie ended up grossing more than $16 million domestically in its opening weekend and has positioned itself as one of the highest-reviewed horror movies of the year so far.

At its core, the movie delves into the unhealthy nature of obsession following Bear’s fixation on his childhood friend and crush, Nikki, which leads to something far more disturbing, especially after the latter spirals out of control.

The movie follows Bear, a shy music store employee, who seeks out a mysterious wish willow in the hopes of making Nikki fall in love with him. However, things eventually devolve into something far more sinister with Nikki becoming a terrifying, suffocating, and possessive force.

Does Nikki Break Free of One Wish Willow’s Spell?

Barker’s movie immaculately blurs the line between romance and obsession, and showcases how much of a destructive force someone’s inhumane fixation can prove to be for both the giver and the recipient.

In Bear’s case, he shortly becomes overwhelmed by Nikki’s growing fixation on him, to the point that she barely lets him leave her side. Although Nikki’s transition from being possessive to completely unhinged is gradual, the true point of no return comes with Sarah’s death, after Bear secretly meets with her to talk things through.

Obsession Originally Had an Even Bleaker Ending

While the ending isn’t uplifting by any means, as Curry Barker brilliantly showcases the psychological turmoil of how unhealthy obsession can erode one’s morality and identity, originally, even Nikki was supposed to die in the planned ending.

Inde Navarrette, who stars as Nikki, revealed that the decision to let her character survive was a last-minute change, recalling (via THR):

In terms of what potentially could have been my death scene in the ending, the original ending was that I was going to choose that I didn’t want to live that way anymore, after all of the trauma and pain. Last second, they were like, “Let’s just try this one thing,” and from other people’s perspective, which is high praise for me, and I really, really appreciate it, they did one take, they felt like it was magical and electric, and they knew that that was the ending.

Subsequently, this also leaves the door open for a potential follow-up, and Navarrette isn’t against the prospect of returning to this role in the foreseeable future.

Does Obsession Have a Post-Credit Scene?

No, the acclaimed horror film from Curry Barker doesn’t feature any mid- or post-credit scenes, as Obsession does a solid job of tying up its major plotlines before the credits roll.

This isn’t to say a sequel is completely out of the question, however, as even though Inde Navarrette likes the idea of the story being a one-and-done experience, she also isn’t entirely against the prospect of a follow-up. She told THR:

I absolutely would, but I really love the idea that it’s kind of left there. It’s like a memory, whenever you look back to yourself at like 24, 23, 22 those are all chunks, and they begin and end at a certain point. I think that’s kind of like this story. It begins and it ends, and then it’s new Nikki, if you will.

Whether a potential follow-up to this horror masterclass eventually gets realized remains to be seen, but given Curry Barker’s impeccable feature debut, it’ll be exciting to see how his career unfolds in the coming years.
