Not Suitable For Work Episodes 4-5 Recap: AJ’s Career Breakthrough Comes With Unexpected Consequences

Half the charm of Not Suitable For Work comes from watching smart people make spectacularly questionable choices while trying to convince themselves they are doing the right thing.  Not Suitable For Work’s first three episodes laid the groundwork beautifully. AJ was fighting to be taken seriously at work, Abby was trying to establish herself beyond Vanessa’s shadow, and almost everyone seemed tangled in some form of romantic confusion. Episodes 4 and 5 build on those foundations and raise the temperature considerably. Careers move forward, friendships get tested, and feelings that were previously hiding behind awkward glances finally step into the spotlight.

AJ’s biggest storyline revolves around an important business opportunity involving Chrys Lee and her shapewear company. The deal is hanging by a thread because Bill previously insulted Chrys during her college years. His dismissive comments damaged the relationship long before either side realized they would one day need each other professionally. AJ immediately recognizes an opportunity.

Unlike most of her colleagues, she understands that representation matters. When Chrys openly questions why no women are involved in the discussions, AJ steps forward and inserts herself into the conversation. Naturally, Davis hates the idea. Throughout these episodes, Davis spends an alarming amount of time telling AJ what she should not be doing. Every time she takes initiative, he acts as though she is violating some sacred workplace rulebook.

Fortunately, AJ ignores him. After discovering that Chrys attends a Pilates class, AJ drags Davis along and directly addresses the problem. Instead of dancing around the issue, she asks Chrys why she refuses to work with the firm. Bill owes her an apology. Back at the office, AJ boldly tells Bill exactly that. At first, he reacts with wounded pride. Then he realizes she is absolutely right. The eventual meeting becomes one of AJ’s finest moments. Not only does she convince Bill to apologize sincerely, but she also comes up with a clever presentation idea involving Chrys’s products. The strategy works perfectly and helps rescue the deal.

Not Suitable For Work Episodes 4-5: Bill Finally Acts on His Feelings

For several episodes, Not Suitable for Work has quietly hinted at a connection between AJ and Bill. Episode 4 finally pushes that storyline forward. After watching AJ save an important account and navigate a difficult situation with confidence, Bill can no longer pretend his feelings are strictly professional. When they find themselves alone in the office, he kisses her. It is a moment many viewers probably saw coming.

What nobody expected was what happened afterward. Bill spends the next few days acting as though nothing happened. He avoids AJ, creates distance, and leaves her completely confused. Naturally, AJ assumes he regrets crossing the line. The silence becomes more frustrating than the kiss itself. Thankfully, Episode 5 delivers an answer. Bill eventually shows up at AJ’s apartment and explains that the mistake was not the kiss. The mistake was letting it happen at work. Then he asks her on a proper date. While the scene is undeniably romantic, I still find myself conflicted about the dynamic. The chemistry works, but the power imbalance remains impossible to ignore. The show knows it is complicated, which at least makes the storyline more interesting.

Not Suitable For Work Episodes 4-5: Abby Takes a Risk and Disappoints Vanessa

While AJ thrives professionally, Abby finds herself caught between loyalty and opportunity. Austin continues pushing her to become his stylist rather than remain Vanessa’s assistant. Initially, Abby resists because she genuinely respects Vanessa and values everything she has learned under her guidance. However, ambition eventually wins. When Austin suggests he might find another stylist, Abby agrees to work with him. The timing could not be worse. Vanessa is already dealing with personal grief after losing her beloved cat. Instead of discussing the situation immediately, Abby delays the conversation.

That decision comes back to haunt her. By the time Abby finally approaches Vanessa, she already knows everything. The interaction is surprisingly restrained. Vanessa does not yell. She does not create a scene. She simply wishes Abby good luck. That quiet disappointment hurts far more. You can see the sadness behind Vanessa’s smile, and Abby realizes that pursuing her own future comes at the cost of someone she genuinely cares about.

Not Suitable For Work Episodes 4-5: Kel Gets Dragged into Austin’s Romantic Scheme

Kel’s storyline delivers some of the episodes’ funniest and most awkward moments. After rumors surrounding his modelling work spread, his parents confront him and learn he has abandoned medical school in favor of acting. Unsurprisingly, the conversation ends badly. Now cut off from both parents, Kel focuses entirely on launching an acting career. That search leads him to Austin.

Austin offers access to his agent, but there is a catch. He wants Kel to help improve his chances with Abby. I will admit this storyline made me like Austin a little less. There is something uncomfortable about treating friendship as a bargaining chip. Fortunately, Kel proves far more mature than expected. By the end of Episode 5, he decides not to push Austin’s agenda because it feels manipulative and unfair. Sometimes the best thing a friend can do is stay out of the way.

Not Suitable For Work Episode 5 Ending Explained: What Happens Between AJ, Bill, Abby and Austin?

The ending of Episode 5 leaves several relationships standing at crossroads. The biggest development belongs to AJ and Bill. After days of confusion, Bill finally clarifies his intentions. He is not trying to distance himself from AJ because he regrets their connection. He simply wants to approach it properly. That distinction matters because his appearance at her apartment signals that this relationship is no longer a fleeting workplace flirtation.

Meanwhile, Abby unknowingly finds herself at the center of another romantic complication. Austin’s feelings continue growing stronger, yet Kel chooses not to reveal the truth. His decision comes from a surprisingly sincere place. He believes Abby deserves to make her own choices without outside influence. That choice keeps the tension alive moving forward. Elsewhere, Davis undergoes a small but important evolution. After spending most of the episodes undermining AJ, he eventually realizes how impressive she actually is. By the end, he appears to have accepted that capable women do not threaten him.
