Garfield went to extreme lengths to keep his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home a secret. He had to lie more than once during interviews and he even had to be rude to a delivery boy to keep the secret from spilling. Worst of all, he outright lied to his The Amazing Spider-Man co-star and ex, Emma Stone.

Spider-Man 4 is probably one movie that can’t seem to escape the speculations from fans. Marvel and Sony were reportedly engaged in a tug-of-war related to the direction of the new film. Marvel wanted a more grounded route for the film, while Sony insisted on the cash-grabbing multiversal aspect.

There were numerous speculations about whether previous Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, would return to the fourth film after their appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield recently spoke to GQ and shared that he hasn’t signed up for Spider-Man 4. He told the outlet, “I’m gonna disappoint you.”

However, he is sure that no one is going to trust him for his word from now on. Referring to the several times he denied his role in No Way Home, Garfield shared, “But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.” Fans agree as they are now aware of how well he can keep a secret for Kevin Feige. Considering how well he kept the No Way Home secret last time, this feels like exactly what he would say if he actually was in Spider-Man 4.

Garfield shared that he would return to a big franchise role only if it was the right thing for him. He shared, “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun.” Garfield also joked that he would need to save up for school tuition for his future kids and the franchise money is something he would look forward to at that point.

Both Andrew Garfield and his fellow Spider-Man actor Tom Holland were forced to lie in interviews to keep Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s cameos a surprise. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield recalled an encounter with a delivery boy, who almost gave up his secret role in No Way Home.

In 2021, an X user claimed that he delivered food to someone who he thought was Garfield, sharing that he was “rude asf”. The incident happened in Atlanta, which speculated rumors about Garfield being part of the project. Garfield confirmed the story and shared that it happened during his first night in Atlanta when he arrived for the shoot. He shared:

This is my first night! I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I’m gonna get rumbled that I’m in Atlanta immediately.’ Lo and behold, the guy goes like, ‘I think I just delivered food to Andrew Garfield.’ I think he called me rude, which I definitely wasn’t. I did ask to do social distancing, but I obviously upset the man. I didn’t mean to and I apologize for anything that may have been misconstrued as being rude — I don’t like upsetting people.

Interestingly, he even kept it a secret when Emma Stone asked him about it. He shared that Stone kept on texting and asking him whether he made an appearance in the new Spider-Man film. He shared, “And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.'” She kept on insisting he tell the truth but he maintained his story which convinced Stone. When she saw the film, she had the obvious response to him, “You’re a j*rk.”
