New Mahershala Ali Thriller’s Near-Perfect Score Is His Perfect Comeback After ‘Blade’

Mahershala Ali might have already released Blade in a different universe, but in this universe, his recent thriller received a near-perfect score in this iconic comeback after Blade. The film, titled Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, has received a Critics’ Score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, making a new comeback for Ali.

In fact, the film is so brilliant that even audiences have given it a score of 94% on the review-aggregator website. Check out Rotten Tomatoes’ official praise for the movie below:

Although fans were sad to see the stalled Blade project eventually being scrapped, it was because Mahershala Ali was a part of the film that he was able to meet the director, Bassam Tariq.

How the Stalled Blade Project Led to Mahershala Ali’s Thriller

It was back in 2022 when Mahershala Ali was announced to portray the lead role of Blade in Marvel’s reboot, Blade. Alongside Ali, director Bassam Tariq was also hired to helm the project, and that is where the two met for the first time.

Eventually, Tariq left the film to focus on his other projects, and eventually, Ali stepped down from the role too, due to countless delays and no updates over long periods of time.

However, it was during these moments that Bassam Tariq reconnected with Ali and pitched him the idea of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. In fact, Tariq mentioned that he knew that “there would be a time that we [he and Ali] would come together”.

Therefore, although Marvel’s Blade couldn’t become a reality, we at least got this iconic Mahershala Ali thriller with high ratings.

Mahershala Ali Opens Up About The Film’s Title And Faith

In the hadith, a man asks the Prophet Muhammad, “Who deserves the best of me?” and the prophet responds, “Your mother.” The man asks twice more, and the prophet replies each time, “Your mother”.

This conversation forms the core premise of Ali and Tariq’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Latif (Ali) is a Houston hit man and a father to three kids who is scrambling to find breast milk for his youngest daughter after his wife’s death. However, he struggles to reconcile his Muslim faith and his dedication to his children with his profession.

During an interview with The New York Times, Mahershala Ali revealed just how this hadith resonated with his own relationship with his mother.

I think this hadith, along with ‘heaven is at the feet of your mother,’ has everything to do with why I have the relationship that I have now with my mom. It’s as a result of those things where I began to rebuild my connection and relationship to my mother.

Alongside the core storyline, there are also subtle nods to Muslim faith, from funeral rituals to the way the prayer is portrayed. Fans have loved Ali’s performance in the thriller movie, making the 2026 film an iconic comeback for the star.
