Money Heist may get most of the attention, but Lupin has quietly become one of Netflix’s biggest non-English hits. The two shows share a lot of DNA. Both follow a brilliant mastermind who is always several steps ahead of the police, and both are built around clever plans and last-minute twists.
The big difference is in the approach. Money Heist is loud and explosive, with a large crew taking on a single massive job. Lupin is smoother and more personal. Assane Diop mostly works alone, using charm and disguises instead of guns, and his heists are driven by a deeply personal mission to clear his father’s name.
Netflix’s Lupin Part 4 Brings Fresh Twists to Assane’s Heists
The first three parts of Netflix’s Lupin followed Omar Sy’s Assane Diop, who set out to expose Hubert Pellegrini, the rich and powerful man who framed his father for a theft he did not commit.
The series is inspired by Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin books. In the show, Assane pulled off daring heists, outsmarted the police, and finally brought Pellegrini down. In Part 3, he rescued his mother, Mariama, but chose to hand himself over to the police to keep his family safe.
Part 4 picks up four years later. Assane is still behind bars and has left Lupin behind for good. He just wants to finish his sentence and take his family to Senegal. But then someone using the Lupin name pulls off a string of museum robberies at the same time, and all the evidence points to Assane. To clear his name, he must escape and become Lupin once again.
This time, the show is trying something new. Omar Sy told Diverto that the team took their time to “find the right idea” before returning. The new villain uses deepfakes and hacking, setting up an old-school versus new-school battle. Sy also told Variety that the season is “moving a little further away from Maurice Leblanc.” He shared:
We brought it more into our own universe. That’s why we’re going further into the prison setting, introducing new technologies and all these different elements. We’re embracing modernity, whether it’s through the prison itself or all the technology that the copycat uses to trap Assane.
Sy’s creative input will be key here. Original creator George Kay has left the show, and Sy now runs it alongside Louis Leterrier as co-showrunner. In short, the story is now largely in his hands. While Netflix has not confirmed anything yet about a Part 5, another chapter would not be a surprise given how popular the show is.
Who Is Returning Alongside Omar Sy in Lupin Part 4?
Omar Sy as Assane Diop in Lupin Part 4 | Credits: Emmanuel Guimier/NetflixOmar Sy leads the cast once again as Assane Diop in Lupin Part 4, and several familiar faces are back with him. Ludivine Sagnier returns as Claire, Assane’s ex-partner and the mother of his son, Raoul.
Antoine Gouy is back as Benjamin Férel, Assane’s loyal best friend. Fans should keep an eye on him, as Sy did not rule out a betrayal somewhere this season.
Soufiane Guerrab returns as Youssef Guédira, the Lupin-loving detective, while Shirine Boutella is back as Sofia Belkacem. She ends up seriously injured during one of the copycat’s museum robberies. Naky Sy Savané also returns as Mariama, Assane’s mother.
Hervé Pierre is back as Hubert Pellegrini, which hints that his story is not over yet. Raoul, now a teenager after the four-year jump, has been recast with Théo Christine. Laïka Blanc-Francard and Grégoire Colin join the cast.
