Naruto Officially Joins One Piece and Demon Slayer in 2026 New Update

Anime adaptations are having a very Hollywood moment in 2026, and now Naruto has officially entered the chat. While One Piece continues expanding its live-action and animated worlds and Demon Slayer is dominating the theatrical conversation with Infinity Castle, Masashi Kishimoto‘s beloved ninja saga has taken its own major step toward the big screen. Lionsgate has begun a worldwide casting search for Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura for its long-awaited live-action movie, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing.

That does not mean Naruto has suddenly received a 2026 release date. Instead, the update is significant because a project that spent years in development is finally moving through a much more tangible stage: finding the actors who will become Team 7.

The biggest news is that Lionsgate and director Destin Daniel Cretton have launched a global casting search for the three young shinobi at the heart of Naruto: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. Casting for additional characters will follow. Lionsgate has been ramping up pre-production, making this a considerably more concrete development than another vague “movie in development” update. Plus, rumors are swirling that Riverdale star Charles Melton is being considered to play Kakashi.

Cretton is not simply attached as a name on a poster, either. Lionsgate announced in 2024 that he would write and direct the live-action adaptation. His previous work includes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, giving him experience with large-scale action, fantasy spectacle, and comic-book storytelling. More importantly, Kishimoto himself has expressed confidence in Cretton, saying he believed the filmmaker was the right director after seeing his work.

And Kishimoto’s latest reaction makes the development feel almost surreal. The creator described seeing Naruto become a Hollywood movie as a “miracle” and said he is eagerly waiting to meet the actors who will bring his characters to life. That casting search is also a bigger deal than it sounds. Team 7 is not merely a collection of popular characters; Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura form the emotional foundation of the original story. Getting those three personalities right could make or break the adaptation before a single Rasengan hits the screen.

The broader 2026 connection with One Piece and Demon Slayer comes from how major anime properties are increasingly commanding mainstream screen space, although their individual announcements are very different. One Piece entered 2026 with a new anime broadcast structure and the launch of the Elbaph Arc, while Netflix has also announced further expansion of its live-action universe, including One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta for 2027.

Meanwhile, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle returned to North American theaters in March 2026 and later won Film of the Year at the 2026 Anime Awards. Naruto’s milestone is different, but arguably just as fascinating. The franchise has been waiting for this moment for years, and the scale of the source material makes the challenge enormous. The original manga ran for 700 chapters after debuting in 1999, while its anime adaptation began in 2002. The franchise has sold more than 250 million copies worldwide.

Now Hollywood has to translate chakra, jutsu, hand signs, ninja combat, giant summons, and an enormous mythology into live action without making the Hidden Leaf Village look like a very expensive cosplay convention. That is the real story behind the 2026 update. There is still no confirmed release date or official cast, but for the first time, Naruto’s Hollywood journey has moved from “remember that movie they announced?” territory to something much more tangible. Team 7 is officially looking for its faces. And yes, suddenly that headband feels a lot more real.
