From the main protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki, to the master strategist, Shikamaru Nara, the story would feel incomplete without their roles.

However, despite these shinobi doing their part to protect the village, not all of them had happy childhoods or uplifting backstories. Without further delay, let’s explore the backstories of the members of the Konoha 11 and rank them by how tragic they are in the Naruto series.

11 Tenten – A Character Who Barely Even Has a Backstory

Tenten is the most ignored character in the entire Naruto series, and there is only one person to blame for that — Masashi Kishimoto. The mangaka barely gave Team Guy’s kunoichi any iconic screen time or standout moments, let alone a backstory; in fact, there isn’t even enough of one to rank.

All we really know about Tenten is that she dreams of becoming a kunoichi like Tsunade, works hard, and exists mostly to round out Team Guy. The tragedy is not what happened to Tenten, it’s everything that never happened at all.

10 Kiba Inuzuka – A Relatively Stable Childhood Compared to Others

Compared to the rest of the Konoha 11, Kiba had one of the most normal backstories in the series. He grew up in a boisterous, close-knit clan, with a mother, a sister, and a bond with Akamaru that the series treats as one of its most uncomplicated sources of joy.

Even though we sometimes see him acting competitively and lashing out, that is mainly due to his nature rather than a defense mechanism. He simply wants to be the best, and he has a family that supports that, by Konoha 11 standards, that is practically a charmed life.

9 Shino Aburame – Clan Tradition That Can Barely Be Called Tragic

Shino Aburame is an interesting case on this list, but can we really call his childhood suffering a tragedy? Following the Aburame Clan’s tradition, Shino was given to the insects at birth, and they made their home inside his body. While this sounds absolutely horrible on paper, it is actually a matter of pride for the members of the clan.

He grows up with a present father, a respected clan identity, and a quiet self-assurance that suggests he knows exactly who he is. His struggles are mostly social — he is awkward, easy to overlook, and prone to being literally forgotten mid-sentence by the narrative itself.

8 Ino Yamanaka – Comfortable Upbringing With Friendly Rivalry

Ino Yamanaka from Team 10 has one of the most stable foundations in the group — a respected clan, a present and caring father, social confidence, and enough emotional intelligence to reach out to a lonely Sakura when no one else did. However, that does not mean her story is entirely without conflict.

She is involved in one of the most ridiculous rivalries in the series: her conflict with Sakura over Sasuke. She eventually outgrows it and steps into her own as a capable shinobi, particularly during the Fourth Shinobi World War arc. Still, compared to Sakura, Ino’s life is almost completely free of real tragedy.

7 Sakura Haruno – Long Attachment to Someone Who Didn’t Care

One of the most beautiful female characters in the Naruto anime series, Sakura Haruno, had one of the most emotionally conflicted narratives in the series. Yes, many of us hated her for turning down the protagonist, but she wasn’t really living a happy love life at all. Her affection for and attraction to Sasuke, who barely even acknowledged her, led her to despair and emotional turmoil.

To add to that, she was mocked relentlessly as a child for the size of her forehead, a small thing that still hit hard enough to give her a persistent inner critic she spent years arguing with. Aside from that, her home life was stable, and her parents were present, something not many others had.

6 Choji Akimichi – Bullied as a Child for His Growing Size

We hate to say it, but the anime and manga world is not entirely free from bullying, especially when it comes to things we also face in real life. Choji Akimichi was one of the characters subjected to this in his childhood. He was bullied for his size and appetite from a young age in a way that cut deep and left him with lasting self-doubt about his worth as a shinobi and as a person.

However, despite the harsh treatment he endured socially, Choji had a warm, supportive family, a proud clan with a clear place for him, and Shikamaru, who befriended him without condition or pity. Maybe because he knew how it felt, Choji, along with Shikamaru, was one of the few who didn’t shun Naruto and instead became one of his first friends.

5 Hinata Hyuga – Rejected by Her Own Father as a Disappointment

This is where the tragic backstories finally start to kick in, beginning with the Hyuga Clan princess, Hinata Hyuga. Despite being the elder sister and coming from the main family, Hinata was rejected by her own father, and the responsibilities were instead given to her younger sister, Hanabi. Hinata was very shy, timid, and caring, which her father apparently saw as weakness.

Hinata grew up in her own household feeling disposable, measuring herself against a standard she could never seem to meet, and watching her father’s approval go elsewhere. To make matters worse, Neji resented her position, and she was fully aware of it. Her growth into confidence and strength was built entirely on overcoming a family that didn’t believe in her.

4 Shikamaru Nara – A Tragic Loss That Permanently Defined Him

Definitely the most intelligent character among the Konoha 11 and a pivotal character in the series, Shikamaru Nara had a considerably chill childhood and easy early training days — until the Akatsuki came into the picture. As a member of Team 10, he was very fond of his mentor, Asuma Sarutobi, who was killed by Hidan right before his eyes.

Using his strategic thinking and resilience, Shikamaru exacted his revenge on Hidan, and Hidan was never the same again. He became a supportive figure for Kurenai Yuhi, Asuma’s pregnant wife, and from that day onward, he grew into a mature and responsible shinobi. Before that, everything had been a “drag” to him.

3 Neji Hyuga – Cursed and Lost His Father to the Main Family

Neji Hyuga might be one of the very few characters who serves as an example of the dark implications and undertones of the Naruto series, implications and undertones that slightly blur the line between a shonen and a seinen story. To put it more bluntly, Neji was one of the biggest victims of clan-based oppression and discrimination.

Neji was born into the Hyuga clan’s branch family, which meant he was branded on his forehead with a curse seal that allowed the main family to inflict agonizing pain on him or even kill him on command. And if that wasn’t traumatic enough for a little boy, he had to watch his father, Hizashi, be forced to die in place of the head of the main family as part of a political arrangement. To make it even worse, he didn’t even know the full truth about it for years.

2 Rock Lee – Born Without Chakra and Dismantled Twice

When you see Rock Lee, you may see an overly enthusiastic taijutsu prodigy and a master of hand-to-hand combat. However, that is only the outcome of a terrible twist of fate Kishimoto had planned for him. In a world where every shinobi relies on chakra for ninjutsu and genjutsu, Rock Lee was born without the ability to use either.

Still, Might Guy believed in him and shaped him into a beast in taijutsu. But it seemed Kishimoto had it out for him when he had Gaara crush Lee’s arm and leg during the Chunin Exam Arc so badly that the medical verdict was clear: retire, or risk death on the operating table.

1 Naruto Uzumaki – The Orphan and the Village Outcast From Konoha

We feel like even tragedy felt sorry for Naruto Uzumaki, the boy we all came to cherish and love. His tragic backstory begins before he could even utter a single word. His father, the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, sealed half of the Nine-Tails’ chakra into him as a newborn — a decision that cost both his parents their lives and left him utterly alone.

The village was not kind to him either. Because he was the Nine-Tails’ vessel, the villagers ignored him and openly despised his presence, all in front of a child who wanted nothing more than love and recognition. If it were not for the handful of people in his life, such as Iruka, Shikamaru, and Choji, Naruto might have been consumed by loneliness, and we would never have seen his journey unfold into that of the future Hokage of the very village that once hated him.
