Most-Asked Questions About Netflix’s If Wishes Could Kill, Answered

2 hours ago 8

Netflix’s South Korean thriller, If Wishes Could Kill, has become one of the most interesting supernatural horror series this year. Mixing tech with supernatural elements and curses has made it a standout. Its layered narrative, combined with supernatural elements, has naturally left viewers with a mountain of questions about its complex lore.

Unlike typical thrillers, this eight-episode series does not spoon-feed explanations; instead, it builds a complex web of cause and effect. If you have just finished the series and are trying to piece together the mystery behind the Girigo App, here are all the major questions answered.

1. Who Created the Girigo App and How Does it Work?

As we saw in flashback, the app was created by a student named Kwon Si-won. She was a student of Seorin High School a few years before the story is set. She was in a coding club, and her group was supposed to create an app for a competition. With her friends’ help, she created the app.

Initially, all that someone had to do was submit a video on the app along with their name and birthdate written. It was supposed to be a normal app, and her friend Do Hye-ryeong helped her create the app’s logo.

However, the two friends fell apart, leading the app to become an evil application. Once users were granted their wishes, they would die 24 hours after their wishes were granted. But Na-ri later discovers that a wishmaker’s timer would stop if someone else made a wish.

2. What Happened Between Si-Won and Hye-ryeong?

Kwon Si-won is the daughter of a shaman lady who apparently drove her husband to suicide. She hates her mother and lives in a ‘hideout’ with her best friend, Do Hye-ryeong. They are each other’s closest friends and know everything about each other.

But Si-won does not like how Hye-ryeong keeps visiting her shaman mother. After getting annoyed at her mother, she destroys her mother’s special attic, causing dark forces to try to attack her. Her mother stops them at the last minute, which also causes her to die in the process.

Before dying, she gave Hye-ryeong an amulet to protect Si-won. When Si-won finds out, she publicly humiliates her best friend and shares her Girigo wish video, praying for her crush to love her. This angers Hye-ryeong to the point that she kills herself as a sacrifice to curse the app and kill Si-won.

3. Who are Kang Ha-sal and Bang-ul?

Kang Ha-sal is the elder sister of Ha-joon, one of the students of Seorin High School. She is a mysterious figure and is a shaman, who is confined to one place due to reasons unexplained in the first season.

Bang-ul is her trusted partner who investigates supernatural beings and helps protect Ha-sal. He also performs rituals along with her. Together, they help the high schoolers to get to the bottom of the app’s origins and battle the evil spirits.

4. What do Se-ah and Ha-joon Discover?

When Se-ah makes the wish to save her boyfriend Geon-woo’s life, Ha-joon takes her to Ha-sal to save her. There, they discover the app’s curse can only be broken by finding out and destroying the physical object tying it to this world, which is the phone it was created on.

Se-ah, Ha-joon, and Bang-ul discover Hyeon-wook’s Discord friend who shared the Girigo app with him. By tracing Hyeon-wook’s laptop’s cache and with the help of the Discord guy, they find a photo of Si-won and Hye-ryeong, and Si-won’s mother’s home.

5. What Happens to Na-ri in If Wishes Could Kill

Na-ri, one of the high schoolers, has a crush on Geon-woo. When she finds out Geon-woo and Se-ah are dating, she feels heartbroken, feeling betrayed by Se-ah. She also does not like Hyeon-wook for his childish personality.

When she goes to a party with her friends, Hee-jin and Dong-jae, they tell her to stay away from the app as they were in Si-won’s coding team. Annoyed, she makes a wish for Dong-jae and Hyeong-wook’s death. Once they both die, she loses her mind.

But feeling insecure about herself and betrayed by Geon-woo and Se-ha, she gets possessed by the app. She tries to kill them both on multiple occasions. Even when she regains control over herself, she chooses to be evil, even attacking Se-ha in the spirit realm before being eventually defeated.

6. How Does the Girigo Curse End?

Ha-sal tells Se-ha and Ha-joon that the curse would end once they destroy the maehyung, which is the object tying the spirits to this world. Initially, they believe that it is Hye-ryeong’s phone. Yet, destroying with the Cheonjingwan arrow does nothing.

Ha-sal then goes into the spirit realm along with Se-ha and tells her to look for Si-won’s phone. They find out that while Hye-ryeong had made a wish to kill Si-won, Si-won’s wish was to eternalize Hye-ryeong’s curse.

In the spirit realm, Ha-sal uses the Cheonjingwan arrow to defeat Si-won’s vengeful spirit. Meanwhile, Se-ha looks for her phone and eventually destroys it, thus ending the curse.

7. How Does If Wishes Could Kill End?

At the end of If Wishes Could Kill Ha-sal and Bung-ul have a little celebration in Hyeong-wook’s memory, along with Se-ha, Geon-woo, and Ha-joon. While they are healing, Bang-ul makes a shocking confession.

During the fight with Si-won’s ghost at the school, he had his eye injured. This made him see spirits with his right eye. Once he removes his glasses, we see his eye turn blazing red. He promises Ha-sal that he will help her get out of the house that she is confined in.

8. Who Dies and Who Survives in Season 1?

At the end of Of Wihses Could Kill, there are quite a few people who do not make it out alive. Hyeon-wook dies at the start of the series. In the flashback that we see, Gi-tae and Si-won’s mother also dies.

While Si-won and Hye-ryeong also kill themselves, their spirits are defeated in the spirit realm, too. As for Na-ri, it is not revealed if she is alive or dead, even though we saw Se-ha defeat her spirit in the spirit realm.

As for survivors, our three main characters— Se-ha, Geon-woo, and Ha-joon—survive, as do Ha-sal and Bung-ul.

9. What Happens in the End Credits Scene?

In the end credits scene, Hyeong-wook’s Discord friend, Min-woo, is seen breaking into the school. He finds Na-ri’s phone with the help of a Discord user. While we do not know who that Discord user is, they also tell him the password of Na-ri’s phone is Si-won’s birthday.

He opens the phone and finds the Girigo app installed. There is a possibility that the user might be Na-ri’s spirit, and that the curse has now transferred to her phone.

10. Will There Be If Wishes Could Kill Season 2?

As of now, there is no official confirmation of a second season. However, the open-ended nature of the story leaves plenty of room for continuation. First of all, we do not really know the fate of Na-ri, and the end credits scene hints that she might be out to get revenge now.

We also do not know Ha-sal’s backstory and why she worships a white snake, or why she is trapped in the distant compound. Her relationship with Bung-ul and how they met also remains unanswered.

Moreover, there are also questions left unanswered about Si-won and Hye-ryeong’s friendship: how they met, their families, why they lived alone, and more. Details about Si-won’s shaman mother are also unknown, which a potential second season could explore.
