A common trope in power fantasy anime is to have resurrection users, such as Subaru from Re:ZERO. However, that doesn’t always mean that the protagonist can use their ability well.

Let’s rank six such popular anime characters who can resurrect, based on how quickly they can adapt. The ranking metric is the exact time required for the character to process their death and come back to life. Furthermore, the convenience of the resurrection also matters here. Let’s dive in.

6 Orochimaru Requires An External Host

Orochimaru from Naruto achieves resurrection by fragmenting his consciousness and putting it into Cursed Seals placed on subordinates. If his primary body is destroyed, he remains dead until an external catalyst initiates his revival. Orochimaru uses his resurrection ability in order to get back at his enemies, even after being defeated.

A third party must perform the Curse Mark Release technique using his genetic material to extract his consciousness and reconstruct his physical form. While strong, he cannot directly control his own resurrection actively. What he requires is a long-term plan (which he is smart enough to devise), and people he can trust with the ritual to bring him back to life.

5 Meliodas Requires Traversal Through Purgatory

Meliodas from The Seven Deadly Sins carries a curse that allows him to resurrect. Upon his death, his body remains incapacitated, and his soul is sent to Purgatory, which is a dimension between the living world and the afterlife. So, he does not resurrect immediately.

To return to the living world, his soul has to navigate Purgatory, a process requiring significant time, even though time itself doesn’t make sense during the process. During this period, the Demon King erodes his emotions. When Meliodas resurrects in his reconstructed body, he reverts to his primal state – that of minimal empathy. In this state, Meliodas becomes cruel and almost merciless, losing his usual fun personality.

4 Alucard Can Immediately Reconstruct His Body

Alucard absorbs the blood and souls of his targets, storing them within his own body. When he sustains fatal damage that destroys his physical form, he expends one of these stored souls to reconstruct his body and resurrect. This process is instantaneous. He experiences zero hesitation or psychological downtime.

However, if he is killed enough times, he will die. That stopped being the case when he absorbed Schrodinger. With that, he can be anywhere, anytime. He even managed to return after 30 years. Combined with many other abilities like regeneration, invisibility, and even teleportation, Alucard is a nightmare for his enemies.

3 Kei Nagai Simply Resets Everything

Kei Nagai from Ajin: Demi-Human possesses the standard Ajin resurrection ability. Upon death, his body completely resets. Any physical injuries, fatigue, or foreign substances like tranquilizers are instantly eradicated as his body reconstructs itself. His adaptability comes from the fact that, later in the story, he is simply not afraid to die either.

Nagai does not view death as a failure state; rather, he sees it as a utility. If he is exhausted, he can simply eliminate his own body and come back to life right then and there. There is no limit to this ability. For Kei, his resurrection is nearly instantaneous.

2 Subaru Natsuki Is Held By His Trauma

Subaru Natsuki from Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World possesses an ability called Return by Death. When killed, his consciousness is sent back in time to a fixed point, which he cannot control, resurrecting him in a past physical state. The only reason for his 2nd place is because of his lack of control, even if he will always, without delay, resurrect in the past. This theme makes this anime stands out as an Isekai.

Subaru retains the exact memories. Because he is not strong in any other aspect, he consistently experiences panic after resurrecting. Furthermore, he can be stuck in a time loop if the resurrection point is too close to his death. However, in most scenarios, he is able to change not just his own fate but also the fates of others around him using his ability.

As for reaction speed, Subaru is really abnormal. From his enemies’ and companions’ perspective, he is an all-knowing person who can practically see the future. However, that is because when he resurrects, he goes back in time, giving him more time to adapt to what’s coming.

1 Anos Voldigoad Has A Near Instant Resurrection Ability

Anos possessed multiple spells that could allow him to come back to life. First and foremost, upon his death, 2000 years ago, he cast a spell that allowed him to be reborn in a normal body later in the timeline.

Secondly, he possesses Ingal, which can resurrect not just himself, but also others. Even if the entire body ceases to exist, he can reconstruct the source, which is like a soul in that world. As if playing with his opponents, Anos has been seen killing and resurrecting his own opponents again and again with his ability.
