Mistborn Movie Update: Brandon Sanderson Reveals Why the Screenplay Is Taking So Much Time

Mistborn fans are getting consistent updates about the movie from Brandon Sanderson himself, and just recently, he revealed the script may take some time to complete due to several reasons. Apart from his jam-packed schedule and personal commitments, the author also needs to do a lot of revisions, as revealed on his Weekly Update:

Little bit of progress on the Misborn screenplay this week. Not as much, because I’ve been doing a lot of revisions on it. So, I’m going to just move it up 1%—bing to 91%. That doesn’t give you a good indication of how much I’ve been digging into it. Screenplay—you just do a lot of drafts, a lot of revisions. And so, there are parts of this draft that have seen like 12 passes. So you just need to be super tight on a screenplay.

While progress has been slower than anticipated, it’s understandable why Sanderson needs the extra time to refine the script rather than rush it to completion. After all, he’s been consistent with his Mistborn progress outputs in the past few months, so this little delay should not worry fans too much.

Brandon Sanderson Aims to Wrap Up Mistborn Screenplay by August

Early this year, Sanderson envisioned completing the script within five months, teasing a June deadline. Evidently, he was not able to deliver it within that month, mainly due to his busy schedule. Lots of revisions were also required of him, on top of making sure the story remains faithful to the source material.

In the same weekly update, Sanderson comforted fans with the promise that he is “still planning to turn that in next month sometime,” which means he’s looking into wrapping up the screenplay either by the end of July or within the month of August.

Sanderson also revealed that he’s currently swamped with several commitments affecting the progress of the script. He will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mistborn’s publication with a special livestream before taking a week off to mark his and his wife’s 20th wedding anniversary.

The author’s projected completion time is very plausible given the rate of his writing progress. Sanderson is known for his productivity, previously joking that he might still bring his work while on vacation.

Mistborn Film Still on Track, Sanderson Meets With Apple TV Again

Sanderson has the full creative control of the Mistborn project, but he also still needs to work and collaborate with the heads over at Apple TV. The author confirmed last month that he had meetings with the production company, stating that things are going smoothly (via Weekly Update on YouTube):

It’s looking really good. I’ve had a bunch of meetings. I actually flew out last week and was at Apple again. This is very regular now, which is a lot of fun but also a lot of time.

This is great news for fans who have been waiting for a Mistborn adaptation. Despite the small delay, it seems like the whole preparation is going according to plan. That’s the beauty of having the author take the reins on his own book adaptation. While he’s taking opinions from the business side of entertainment, he’s still making sure fans will get the movie they deserve.
