From a brand-new protagonist known as The Stranger to the Moscow setting, here’s everything we know so far about Metro 2039.
Metro 2039 Release Window and Platforms Revealed
While an exact launch date has not been officially confirmed by 4A Games or Deep Silver, Metro 2039 is now officially scheduled for Winter 2026. The game will be arriving on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
The Metro series has also always had a strong affinity towards Xbox, which makes it likely that the upcoming game can possibly arrive as an Xbox Day One drop, albeit locked to just a certain tier of the subscription, much like how it is with Forza Horizon 6.

As revealed by the developers, the events of Metro 2039 are brand new, with the story being made in collaboration with none other than Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author known for writing the post-apocalyptic book series METRO.
As the name suggests, the story is set in 2039, with Moscow now reduced to rubble. All the fractured factions that once populated the Metro have now been unified under a single, brutal ruler, known as Hunter. The protagonist, The Stranger, happens to be someone who is haunted by violent nightmares and has now been dragged back into this fascist-led Metro against his will.
In a first for the series, The Stranger is going to be a fully voiced protagonist, departing from the silent-hero style as seen before in the franchise. Gameplay-wise, Metro 2039 is going to be heavy on environmental storytelling, with the official trailer showcasing how every item and prop in the game has been meticulously placed to deliver the narrative through the player’s surroundings.
As the game’s Executive Producer, Job Bloch (via Xbox Wire), states:
Nothing is prefabricated – everything is unique and grounded, When you walk into a room, it’s clear that a person lived there. You can feel what they were doing right before they left or died.
The game also looks beautiful in terms of visual fidelity. This is done with the help of 4A Games’ own custom engine, built for this particular game. In a nutshell, the game’s story is officially the developer’s darkest journey yet, with top-class graphics and narrative elements to support it.
