Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has condemned incidents of suspected hate-motivated violence against a Jewish bakery chain on Sunday.

Police are investigating after they say two locations of the same Jewish-owned bakery chain — Kiva’s — were targeted in separate incidents Sunday morning, including one where a window was hit by gunfire.

Toronto Police said on social media that officers were first called to the Yonge St.-St. Clair Ave. W. area at about 8 a.m. for reports that a window at a Jewish-owned bakery had been struck by gunfire.

Investigators found evidence of a firearm being discharged at the scene.

There were no injuries reported.

About 20 minutes later, officers responded to another location of what they said was the same Jewish-owned bakery chain new Bathurst St. and Steeles Ave. W. after receiving reports of a broken window.

Police said investigators did not find evidence of any gunfire at that location and that no injuries were reported.

No suspect descriptions

No suspect descriptions had been provided as of Sunday morning.

Duty Insp. Scott Bradbury told reporters on Sunday that investigators believe that the two incidents are connected. They are being treated as suspected hate-motivated offences.

“We understand that this is concerning for those that work and live in this area, especially members of the Jewish community, and we have all the resources available to thoroughly investigate this matter,” Bradbury said.

He said members of the Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit, Guns and Gangs Integrated Task Force and local divisional officers were canvassing the areas for evidence.

“Members of our hate crime, members of our guns and gang integrated task force, and our divisional units are here canvassing the area, so members of the public can be aware that there’s going to be an increased presence of police in the area conducting our investigation,” he said.

Chow speaks out

Meanwhile, Chow spoke at a separate news conference on Sunday morning.

“Any kind of hate really has no place in Toronto,” she said, adding that police will continue to ramp up security measures around Jewish institutions across the city.

“We in Toronto will double our efforts. Toronto Police through Project Resolute have been guarding synagogues and Jewish community centres and places 24/7, and we’ll see what else we could do. But anyone that is committing a crime should be arrested and punished,” Chow said.

Suspect sought in west-end stabbing

Police are searching for a suspect after a man and a women were stabbed in Toronto’s west end late Saturday night.

Toronto Police said officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the Bloor St. W. and Christie St. area shortly before 10 p.m.

Police arrived to find a 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman suffering from stab wounds. Both victims were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are searching for a male suspect who was described as white, about 5-foot-10 with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured ski mask and dark clothing.

Suspect sough in Scarborough break-in

Police are trying to identify a suspect sought in a Scarborough break-in.

Toronto Police said they responded to a call for a break-and-enter on Thursday, July 23 in the Kennedy and Ellesmere Rds. area.

Police said a man forced his way into a home and stole items from the home.

Cops said he was confronted by the homeowner and was last seen walking towards Kennedy.

The suspect is described as 6 feet with a thin build and 20-30 years old. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants and black sandals.

Youths arrested for weapons incident in Kitchener

Waterloo Regional Police say they’ve charged two youths in connection with a weapons incident at a public pool in Kitchener.

Police responded at about 7:50 p.m. on Saturday to reports of a male brandishing a knife at a public pool on Woodside Ave.

Officers arrived and arrested the suspects.

The first 17-year-old from Waterloo was charged with utter threats to cause death or bodily harm, while a second 17-year-old from Waterloo was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of prohibited weapon, and two counts of assault with a weapon.

They can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

There were no physical injuries reported.
