Matt Reeves is all set to dig even deeper with The Batman Part II, but fans, don’t be fooled. Reeves promises a deeper dive into Gotham’s corruption and Batman’s battles, but is this a trap? The director’s commitment to keeping Batman’s world grounded might just limit the potential of this sequel.

In a recent SFX interview, Reeves shared that while the new script’s nearly done and shooting’s set for next year, the sequel’s release has been pushed to October 2026. He hinted that The Batman Part II will explore new aspects of Gotham and Batman, but remains rooted in realism, rejecting calls to include more fantastical villains like Gentleman Ghost. Reeves revealed:

There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case.

The sequel will feature Colin Farrell reprising his role as the Penguin, linking directly to his upcoming solo series, The Penguin. However, Reeves insists that while the film will expand on the original’s themes, it won’t fully embrace Batman’s supernatural side. 

What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythical characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world. We might push to the edge of the fantastical but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.

Matt Reeves’ grounded approach has worked well before, but is it time for Batman to battle more than just corrupt politicians and crime bosses? Batman’s fought gods and monsters in the comics—maybe it’s time the big screen got a bit more fantastical. For now, fans will have to wait and see if the sequel lives up to the hype or ends up feeling like a déjà vu of past grounded takes.

The Batman Sequel is officially on track

Despite The Batman pulling in a staggering $765 million and snagging three Oscar nods, its sequel’s been shrouded in doubt. Studios usually rush to capitalize on a hit, but here, patience seems to be the name of the game, sparking speculation that the sequel might be axed before it even gets rolling.

With the DCEU undergoing a massive overhaul under James Gunn’s new DCU, many projects were shelved or wrapped up, including the nearly finished Batgirl. The announcement of a new Batman project, The Brave and the Bold, in the DCU further fueled rumors that The Batman could be left behind (via Screenrant).

However, Reeves recently put those worries to rest. While The Batman Part II will exist in the DCU Elseworlds, it’s officially still in the works. So, while it might be a different corner of Gotham, it’s not heading to the movie graveyard just yet.

The Batman 2 is set for release on October 2, 2026.
