Masters of the Universe Sequel Is Likely Happening With Amazon’s Radical Approach

On paper, Masters of the Universe does not look like an obvious sequel candidate. The film has struggled at the box office relative to its reported budget, and much of its audience has come from older viewers who grew up with He-Man in the 1980s. Yet Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly betting on the story once again, with a sequel to see He-Man’s adventures continue.

The studio is operating under a different playbook than traditional Hollywood studios. Rather than focusing solely on theatrical revenue, Amazon appears to be treating Masters of the Universe as a long-term franchise investment designed to appeal to a whole new generation of audiences on streaming.

Why Masters of the Universe Is Likely to Get a Sequel

The biggest reason for the possibility of a sequel is that Amazon’s goals appear to extend beyond theatrical performance. The streamer is playing the long game, envisioning a future for the franchise that attracts younger masses to its platform since it owns exclusive rights to the movies. 

Moreover, He-Man is not an unknown property. Mattel has spent years keeping the franchise alive through animated reboots, toy lines, comics, and streaming projects. Amazon Prime Video has multiple generations of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe content, including the classic Filmation series and later reboots.

According to Deadline, 57% of moviegoers were over 35 and 36% were over 45, while the largest demographic was men aged 45–54. These numbers suggest that nostalgia-driven fans showed up, but younger audiences have yet to embrace the franchise at the same level. This seems to be the biggest reason why Amazon is unlikely to abandon the property after a single film. For brand revival, one movie was never going to be enough.

The first film, despite getting mixed reviews, set the path for the story to continue, introducing a larger mythology that could be expanded through sequels, spin-offs, and streaming content. For Amazon, this sequel may be a part of a broader strategy to rebuild Masters of the Universe into a multi-platform franchise.

Can Amazon’s Strategy Deliver Its Desired Demographic Target?

Amazon’s approach hinges on using Prime Video as a long-term audience-building tool. Instead of relying entirely on one theatrical release to create lifelong fans, the company can attract viewers into decades of existing He-Man content once the movie arrives on streaming. Generating enough buzz and excitement around the movie is just a trick to get more viewers interested in the premise. 

The key question is whether younger viewers will respond. Current audience data suggests the franchise remains strongest among adults who experienced He-Man during its original 1980s popularity. However, Amazon seems keen to gradually skew this dynamic with Prime Video. A child who watches the new movie can immediately access all movies and TV shows based on the He-Man character, including classic episodes and future projects within the same ecosystem. Thus, ensuring repeated engagement opportunities that did not exist earlier.

Whether the strategy succeeds remains uncertain, but Amazon is certainly investing mindfully and strategically into building this franchise. Even though nostalgia remains the property’s primary strength today, Amazon has the resources and distribution network to make a new generation of viewers fall in love with He-Man and make streaming ultimately more important than the box office itself. That makes Masters of the Universe a franchise worth watching even after its theatrical run ends.
