Season 8.5 isn’t just bringing Cyclops, a new 18v18 mode, and a fresh batch of content to Marvel Rivals. Friday, June 12, is also when NetEase is shipping a substantial balance patch that touches every role in the game, with several of Season 8’s most-discussed heroes landing on the nerf list.
Devil Dinosaur, Black Cat, Daredevil, Phoenix, and Star-Lord are all receiving notable reductions to their power, while heroes such as Rogue, Angela, Blade, and Human Torch are getting buffs of their own. Elsewhere, Wolverine and Cyclops are receiving a brand-new Team-Up in Blast Slash, while Rogue’s Hearts As One Team-Up ability with Gambit is being toned down.
Below, we’ve broken down every hero buff, nerf, and Team-Up change included in the Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 balance update.
Every Buff, Nerf, and Hero Change in Marvel Rivals Season 8.5
Image Credit: NetEase GamesThe Season 8.5 balance changes clearly focus on recalibrating heroes that have either become overly dominant or fallen behind the competitive meta of the game. Some heroes are getting straightforward buffs, others are losing oppressive aspects of their kits, and a handful are being adjusted to better fit the game’s current pace heading into the back half of Season 8:
All Vanguard Changes
Angela is receiving a collection of quality-of-life buffs aimed at both mobility and survivability:
- Assassin’s Charge cooldown reduced from 6s to 4s.
- Shielded Stance shield increased from 300 to 350.
- Shield recovery rate increased from 50/s to 60/s.
- Shield reuse interval reduced from 1.5s to 1s.
Taken together, these changes should allow Angela players to engage more frequently while also making Shielded Stance less punishing to cycle during her combos and overall gameplay loop.
Devil Dinosaur
Moon Girl’s best friend is set to receive the largest set of Vanguard nerfs in Season 8.5, with NetEase targeting both his damage output and survivability after a dominant start to Season 8. The changes also hit several of the tools that made him particularly frustrating to play against:
- Remove the knock-down effect from Impact Beam.
- Increase Buddy Barrier cooldown from 10s to 12s.
- Reduce the Percentage Damage per second of the Bleed effect from 3% to 1.5%.
The damage of his Bleed effect has been cut in half, and since Devil Dinosaur’s Bonus Health generation is directly tied to applying Bleed, his survivability takes a noticeable hit as well. Combined with the loss of Impact Beam’s knockdown and a longer Buddy Barrier cooldown, this patch goes after several of the strengths that helped him dominate Vanguard matchups throughout the opening weeks of Season 8.
Magneto
Magneto’s changes are entirely focused on his Ultimate Ability:
- Meteor M maximum duration increased from 4s to 5s.
- Fully charged damage increased from 300 to 350.
It’s a simple buff, but one that gives Magneto players more time to work with and a larger payoff when they successfully charge the ability.
Rogue
Rogue is one of the clear winners among the Vanguard roster this patch:
- Fatal Attraction cooldown reduced from 14s to 12s.
- Defensive Stance energy consumption reduced from 60/s to 50/s.
- Damage-to-energy conversion increased from 35% to 55%.
Between the lower Fatal Attraction cooldown and the Defensive Stance improvements, Rogue players should be able to stay active in fights for longer before needing to disengage. With these buffs, NetEase is clearly compensating, at least in part, for the nerfs coming to her Team-Up with Gambit.
All Duelist Changes
Black Cat’s Season 8 dominance has earned her the largest set of Duelist nerfs in the patch. Rather than targeting a single ability, NetEase has gone after multiple parts of her kit at once, including her damage, survivability, Fortune generation, and access to relics:
- Reduce Cat’s Cradle damage from 50 to 40; remove one charge, changing it to a cooldown, and reduce the cooldown from 10s to 8s.
- Reduce Phantom Pursuit damage from 75 to 70.
- Increase the Fortune cost for Chernobog’s Crystal, Ring of Zona, and Mento-Fish from 200 to 300.
- Increase the Fortune cost for Faltine Flame Orb from 100 to 300, and remove its ability to Reveal enemies behind objects.
- Reduce Calling Card’s dash targeting distance from 60m to 40m.
- Eliminations no longer refresh the Ultimate’s duration, instead adding 3s up to a maximum of 10s.
- Increase the Ultimate’s second-hit base damage from 30 to 70, while removing its Percentage Damage component.
- Reduce Fortune gained from the Ultimate attack from 300 to 200.
All in all, Black Cat’s relics are now significantly more expensive to purchase, while several sources of Fortune generation are also being reduced. Combined with the damage nerfs and the loss of Faltine Flame Orb’s “wallhacks” utility, this patch touches almost every part of her kit. It’ll be interesting to see whether that’s enough to knock her out of the S+ tier conversation after weeks of high ban rates and strong performances in higher-ranked matches.
Blade
Blade is one of several close-range Duelists receiving a helping hand in Season 8.5. NetEase appears to be focusing on improving his ability to stick to targets and convert successful engagements into meaningful damage:
- Increase the Unstoppable duration provided after each use of Scarlet Shroud from 0.4s to 1s.
- Increase Daywalker Dash’s initial sword-stance hit damage from 20 to 30.
- Increase damage per spin from 8 to 10.
The extra Unstoppable duration should make Blade noticeably harder to CC, while the Daywalker Dash buffs give him more reward for successfully reaching his target. Considering how much of Blade’s value comes from staying glued to opponents at close range, both changes work toward the same goal.
Daredevil
The Man Without Fear is losing some of the tools that helped make him one of the game’s best information gatherers and initiators. The changes target his scouting, engagement range, and defensive utility all at once:
- Reduce Radar Sense maximum detection range from 50m to 40m.
- Reduce Sonic Pursuit dash targeting distance from 20m to 12m.
- Reduce Objection! duration from 1.5s to 1.2s.
A 10-meter reduction on his “legal wallhacks” is significant given how much information Daredevil already has access to during a match. Losing 8 meters on Sonic Pursuit is arguably even bigger, dramatically shortening the distance from which he can start fights in the backline.
Elsa Bloodstone
Elsa’s changes focus entirely on helping her passive come online more consistently throughout a match.
- Reduce the damage required to upgrade Inherited Instinct from 1667 to 1111.
While it’s not the flashiest buff in the patch, Elsa players should be able to access stronger Instinct levels more frequently without needing to spend as much time ramping up first.
Human Torch
Johnny Storm receives a pair of ability buffs aimed at keeping him active more often throughout a match:
- Reduce Flaming Meteor cooldown from 20s to 15s.
- Reduce Plasma Body single-charge energize time from 10s to 8s.
This is a straightforward quality-of-life change for Human Torch players. Plasma Body is his primary mobility tool, while Flaming Meteor is regularly used both to start fights and to get out of them, and the patch buffs them both.
Moon Knight
Moon Knight is one of the bigger Duelist losers in Season 8.5, with NetEase targeting both his direct damage and his ability to generate value through bounce interactions.
- Reduce Crescent Dart damage from 25 to 23.
- Reduce Moon Blade damage from 80 to 70.
- Reduce bounce damage retention from 80% to 70%.
Moon Knight will still be generating value through Ankhs and grouped targets, but the payoff will noticeably be lower than before. When combined with the direct damage reductions, his overall damage output is set to take a meaningful hit.
Namor
The King of Atlantis receives a small but potentially useful quality-of-life buff.
- Increase Aquatic Dominion cooldown reduction from 1s to 1.3s when Trident of Neptune hits enemies.
It’s a modest change, but one that should allow Namor players (as long as they’re hitting their shots) to maintain uptime on his Monstro Spawn (squids) a little more consistently over the course of a fight.
Phoenix
Phoenix has been one of the strongest hitscan Duelists since her introduction to Marvel Rivals, and Season 8.5 aims to reduce both her sustain and her ability to pressure opponents from safer distances:
- Reduce Spark detonation healing over time from 10/s to 5/s.
- Reduce Cosmic Flames damage at longer ranges through increased damage falloff.
A section of the community has questioned whether Phoenix needed self-healing in her kit at all, so seeing that sustain effectively cut in half will likely be welcomed by many players. At the same time, the range nerf means Phoenix players will need to play a little closer and take more risks to maximize her damage output.
Star-Lord
Star-Lord rounds out the Duelist nerfs with a change aimed squarely at his mid-to-long-range damage output.
- Element Guns maximum damage falloff adjusted from 65% to 50%.
This hero will still be perfectly capable of dealing damage from range, but opponents should have a bit more breathing room before he closes the gap. More than anything, this feels like NetEase encouraging Star-Lord players to get closer before they start taking over fights.
All Strategist Changes
Adam Warlock is receiving a small buff aimed at further improving the connection between his damage and healing output:
- Increase the Avatar Life Stream charge time reduction when Cosmic Cluster hits enemies from 0.48s to 0.6s.
Adam players will now be rewarded a tad more for landing his charged secondary attacks consistently.
Cloak & Dagger
Cloak & Dagger’s changes focus entirely on healing distribution rather than raw healing numbers:
- When Lightforce Dagger directly hits allies, reduce the single-target healing from 16 to 12 and increase spell field healing from 16 to 20.
- Increase Veil of Lightforce’s healing boost ratio from 15% to 20%.
Directly hit teammates receive the same overall healing as before, but more of that healing is now concentrated in the AoE field. In practice, that should make Cloak & Dagger slightly better at sustaining grouped teammates.
Deadpool (Strategist)
The Merc with a Mouth is receiving a straightforward healing buff in his Strategist role:
- Increase Bouncing Bobblehead spell field healing from 40/s to 50/s (standard) and from 50/s to 55/s (upgraded).
There isn’t much mystery here. Deadpool’s “lord icon throwing” ability will now output more healing than before, giving Strategist players a little more value whenever teammates remain inside its area of effect.
Gambit
Gambit’s only direct hero change in Season 8.5 is aimed at his Ultimate Ability:
- Reduce Ragin’ Royal Flush bonus damage multiplier from 25% to 20%.
- Reduce movement speed bonus from 40% to 30%.
Combined with the separate Hearts As One Team-Up nerf later in the patch notes, Gambit is clearly ending up on the receiving end of a few targeted reductions this update.
Ultron
Ultron receives a mixture of utility and Ultimate nerfs in Season 8.5:
- Reduce Imperative: Patch maximum drone attach distance from 35m to 30m.
- Increase Imperative: Firewall cooldown from 10s to 12s.
- Increase Rage of Ultron energy cost from 4000 to 4300.
The common theme here is uptime. Ultron players will need to play slightly closer to teammates to maintain drone coverage, Firewall won’t be available quite as often, and Rage of Ultron will take longer to earn.
White Fox
White Fox rounds out the Strategist changes with a targeted crowd-control nerf:
- Reduce the Charm and Invincibility spell field radius of Spectral Surge from 0.8m to 0.6m.
A reduction of 0.2 meters may not sound dramatic on paper, but abilities like Spectral Surge often live or die on their area of effect. Players will need to be a little more precise with placement if they want to catch multiple targets inside the ability’s radius.
All Team-Up Ability Changes in Marvel Rivals Season 8.5
Image Credit: NetEase Games/YouTubeTeam-Up abilities are also receiving a shake-up in Season 8.5, with one brand-new partnership arriving alongside Cyclops and an existing combo being toned down:
New Team-Up Ability: Blast Slash
Season 8.5 introduces a brand-new Team-Up between Wolverine and Cyclops called Blast Slash, replacing Wolverine’s spot in Primal Flame. Other than increasing his melee attack range, the ability also gives Wolverine access to a new spinning attack empowered by Cyclops’ optic energy, which the latest Dev Vision vlog showcased in action:
Nerfed Team-Up: Explosive Entanglement
Season 8.5 also tones down one of Rogue’s strongest Team-Up options, reducing both the healing and percentage damage provided by Hearts As One:
- Reduce Hearts As One percentage damage per attack from 3% to 2%.
- Reduce spell field healing per attack from 55 to 25.
This change helps explain why Rogue received several buffs to her base kit earlier in the patch. While Rogue herself is becoming harder to bring down, her Team-Up with Gambit won’t be providing nearly as much healing or percentage damage as it did before.
Between this and the nerfs to Ragin’ Royal Flush, Gambit is one of the few Strategists getting hit from multiple angles in Season 8.5. Whether that’s enough to make him less of a priority ban in higher-ranked lobbies is something players will not have to wait long to find out once the patch goes live.
