In the midst of the announcement on Sunday afternoon by the Leafs that Mats Sundin and John Chayka will run the club’s hockey operations, the Marlies took control of their Atlantic Division semifinal series against the Laval Rocket.

In front of a packed house at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, the Marlies scored three goals in the first eight minutes on the way to a 6-2 victory in Game 3.
Toronto has a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five and can advance to the division final with a win in Game 4 on Tuesday at home; a Rocket win in that match and it’s back to Laval for a deciding Game 5 on Friday night.

Marlies captain Logan Shaw scored a power-play goal 11 seconds into the game — you read that right — and the home side added goals by Easton Cowan, Henry Thrun and Alex Nylander before the end of the first period to chase starting goalie Kaapo Kahkonen.

A goal by Ryan Tverberg on a breakaway in the second put the Marlies up 5-0. When Alex Belzile scored for Laval a minute later, it ended a run of 11 consecutive Marlies goals in the series.
Owen Beck scored for Laval in the third period before Cedric Pare scored for the Marlies.
Artur Akhtyamov made xx saves for the Marlies. Kahkonen made eight saves before he was replaced by Hunter Shepard, who finished with xx saves, to start the second period.
The winner of the series will face the winner of the Syracuse-Cleveland semifinal in the division final.
