An 18-year-old driver who was stopped by the Sûreté du Québec in the early hours of Friday after being clocked driving more than 100 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit was given tickets totalling more than $2,700 and 28 demerit points.
Her licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and the vehicle she was driving was impounded.
The driver was stopped on the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, en route from Montreal to the South Shore, by officers with the SQ’s Cartier-Champlain highway police station, who captured her going 156 km/h. The limit on the bridge is 50 km/h. She was given a $1,993 speeding ticket and 24 demerit points.
She also received a ticket for $524 and four demerit points for being at the wheel after having consumed alcohol. Quebec has a zero-alcohol tolerance policy for all drivers younger than 22 and for holders of learners’ permits or probationary licences. Any detectable alcohol level results in an immediate 90-day licence suspension.
In addition, she was given a $187 ticket for driving in a prohibited area.
Speeding is one of the chief causes of fatal collisions on the province’s roads, the SQ said in its statement about the incident.
