For the last four decades, David E. Kelley has created must-watch TV. From his early work in Ally McBeal and The Practice to his more recent work with Presumed Innocent and Big Little Lies, his resume speaks for itself. His latest collaboration with Apple TV is based on Rufi Thorpe’s novel, Margo’s Got Money Troubles. The eight-episode limited series features a star-studded cast in Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, and Nick Offerman.

What is Margo’s Got Money Troubles about?

Margo’s Got Money Troubles follows Margo (Elle Fanning), whose illicit affair with her junior college professor leaves her pregnant. Enter her mother, Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer), a former Hooters waitress, and her father, former professional wrestler Jinx, who enter the fray to help guide her through the journey. However, when Margo turns to OnlyFans to make money, her life flips upside down, leading to a challenging journey of self-discovery.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles Review

The art of being a carny has been around for hundreds of years. Back in the old days, you had the traveling circus with your “freak shows” or even the world of professional wrestling. As a former professional wrestler, you would often go town to town and wrestle at the local fairs. So I know what it was like to perform in front of a paying audience. However, not until I watched Margo’s Got Money Troubles did I realize how much being an OnlyFans creator is very similar to this same carny.

The stigma around OnlyFans creators (or sex workers in general) is debated rather frequently. At the end of the day, we as a collective society shouldn’t be dictating what women (or men) do to put food on their tables. This especially comes full circle as we watch Margo struggle with her newborn baby and how she will make ends meet. With no real babysitter and her back against the wall, Margo sparks the idea to put food on the table as an OnlyFans creator.

Enter Mark, the college professor baby daddy who didn’t want anything to do with his child, who discovers Margo is creating OnlyFans and decides he wants to come after Margo and full custody of the baby. What Mark didn’t realize was the uphill battle he would face with battling Margo’s parents, Shyanne and Jinx. Shyanne has lived life and has settled into her more mature world of building a life with her new man. However, Jinx, battling addiction from his time as a professional wrestler, has re-entered a pivotal moment in his life. The duo has one thing in mind, and that is to help Margo at any cost.

As we follow this journey, it did take the series a minute to find its footing. After two, maybe three episodes, I wasn’t sure if this was going to be worthy of a watch. That said, once the series gets on track, you start to see the development of these characters and start to be increasingly invested in what’s next.

Speaking of the characters, what a strong ensemble cast. Starting at the top with Elle Fanning, who truly is a showstopper as Margo. Even from the early episodes, you loved Margo, but it was the back half of the season where you saw Fanning truly thrive in the role and take off and never look back. Furthermore, Nick Offerman was RIPPPPPPPED!!! I would watch an entire spinoff show based on Jinx, the professional wrestler. Offerman looked to have a blast with his character, but it was in those raw moments where Jinx was tackling his addiction that he stood out the most. Kudos to Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Thaddea Graham, who all were delights.

The writing is so strong when it talks about the world of sex workers. The misconception around those who create content is absurd. As I mentioned, there really is not much of a difference between spending hundreds of dollars to go watch your favorite professional wrestlers and spending money on OnlyFans creators. Everyone has their thing, and if people are making money and taking care of themselves, it really shouldn’t be any of your business. But good on the creators for exploring this in such a positive and creative way.

Is Margo’s Got Money Troubles worth watching?

Although it takes a few episodes to take off, Margo’s Got Money Troubles is a delightful limited series with a powerful message. The incredible ensemble led by the incredible Elle Fanning truly delights in every single way. I’ve seen just about every David E. Kelley show he has created, but this one might be his most poignant based on the message of the series. If you are patient with the series, you will be happy with the payoff in the end.

The first three episodes of Margo’s Got Money Troubles debut on April 15 on Apple TV. All ten episodes were reviewed.
